I have been searching through the archives on the DMD swap and I saw a mention about someone believing the balancer from a '03 Mazda 6 3.0L is the same part as the Ford 1S7Z-6312-CA. Could this be true or urban legend? My local Mazda dealer parts man says his listing calls the part a 'pulley' and there are none available in the U.S.. Does this jibe with what others say?

On a related note, my wife's new 03 Escape does not have a DMD.

Demon, it is true. All the same part number. The Mazda 6, 3.0L Mazda MPV, Mondeo (2001+), and Mondeo ST220 all use it. Here's a good old thread about it. Linky

So they "did" change the front cover and FEAD design to match the 2.5L on the "new" 3L Duratecs then??? All previous 3L's had both a different cover and FEAD. (Hence why swapping the front cover & pulley on a hybrid was necessary)
Then my real "question" to him is: If he already had the part number then why did the vehicle model make a difference???

Well, sorta. The Taurus still soldiers on today with the unique FEAD setup it's had since '96. The Lincoln LS & Jags have their own setup. But the 3.0L Escape, Mondeo ST220, and Mazda MPV all have the familiar "2.5L style" FEAD. In fact, they all share the same front cover with the 2001+ 2.5Ls. The Mazda 6 is a little bit of a hybrid. It doesn't have the power steering mount in the valley, so it has a unique FC which also contains the VCT. And they moved the water pump drive to the LH exhaust cam instead of the LH intake cam.
