Just changed my tubrine speed sensor, on my 95 contour. Was $58 CAD from ford dealer.. anyways, changing it on an old car is not as easy as it sounds... the thing literally bonded to the tranny lol, While trying to take it out, it obviously snapped in half. Had to drill inside of it, but the magnet is almost impossible to drill, so had to drill the small plastic casing. Anyways, 2 broken bits later, and scratched up hands, i got the phuka out. Popped in a new one, and went for a drive. The bang was gone.. horray, but I did notice that the tranny shifted a bit later than before, so engine noise was more apperant now. Also the 4th still does not engage on the highway. I redline at 120 kph in 3rd for about 10 minutes... only then the 4th engages. Does anyone know what is going on?

I recently changed the TSS and range sensor on the ATX but for some different problem symptoms. The delay in going to 4th doesn't sound good, and I'm not sure if the range sensor would help out this problem. If you noticed some orange or yellow paint marking on the tranny of your 95, you may not be able to use the 'new' TSS sensor. Try a search in the transaxle forum on 'bang shift' and there should be a thread and some links that explain the potential problem with replacing the TSS on the 95 ATXs. If you need an old style sensor, PM me as my old one is good and available. (I could use the new style.)
BTW: If you haven't already changed/flushed the fluid, it would probably be a good idea, especially if it's brown or smells burnt.

Welp, was driving yesterday on the highway, and bam, the car suddenly starts to jolt, basically shifting really fast from 3rd to 2nd and back.
Went to MR Transmission today, basically the whole tranny is fuxored, needs a rebuild. Gonna have to shell out 2-3G's ;( Its funny the car is worth less than that.
Just a lesson kids, change your oil! lol This car's first oilchange was at 170K... lol I rmemeber it didnt even pour out.. was more like goo lol. Maybe the lesson is dont buy used cars without checking them out first... lol

I was just about to suggest that you double check the tranny fluid level. I'm a bit late - sorry.
While you're having the tranny re-done, you might consider an additional tranny fluid cooler. About $50 US. Ask your tranny guy to put in in for you for free. He probably will.
Finally, as the parts for your transmission start to arrive at the shop, call your rebuilder & remind him to put in only Mercon fluid (Dexron III). DO NOT use Mercon V because the owner's manual SPECIFICALLY SAYS DO NOT USE MERCON V. He'll probably be ok with this - the Mercon V is more expensive anyway.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

This is a great forum/website and am so stoked to see such collaboration. Thanks for the contributions you all have made.
Now.
I have a similar hard shifting problem 1<-->2 maybe 2<-->3, not that smart of a DIYer yet. Any way I am shopping for the part at a local autozone and they refer to this as a vehicle speed sensor and I would like some feedback on wheter or not this may or may not be the same part. Should I shop a ford dealer? TIA

This is probably a dealer only part. You might also find it on fordpartsonline.com. The range sensor went bad on my tranny about a month ago and the shifting was going wacko until I replaced it. (About $35) NAPA seems to carry a lot more parts than AZ.

I payed about 25 dollars for mine. It was the biggest piece of crap to deal with. It took me about a week to get the f**cker out. The car was undriveable for an entire week. The plastic eventually broke off, then the insides came out, then i drilled and put in screws, then the screws broke off, then the thing eventually ended up being too deep inside. I turned on the car and it wouldnt move if i put it in drive or reverse. One day I got pissed off and forced it when stepping on the gas and heard a loud bang noise. I looked at the sensor and it was sticking out a bit. I bet it was in the way of something and it forced itself out a bit. So then I finally got it out about 3 hours after that incident, and I only got it out by breaking it apart from the inside and pulling out all the wiring and the magnets from inside first. This was about two (i think) months ago, and my dad's finger nail is coming off NOW, since when he tried taking the sensor out he banged his finger up real bad on the wheel. It was his first try at it when he busted it up, and he hasnt touched my car since. I am pretty sure that my dillemma with it was worst-case scenario. Moral of the story: When taking the tss out, turn as you pull and never force.
