On the Saturn the cover is plastic "composite" so the bolt torquing is very low to keep the plastic from cracking (89 inch-pounds, which seemed not much more than finger-tight). Not sure if the Contour's cover is plastic or metal but if it's the former, be careful if you try to tighten the bolts first to see if you can stop the leak that way.
If I can, I'll take some pictures of what is going on here. But I might have this car looked at before any of that would matter. It's made of metal and does leak around the sides.
I'm not sure how this works. If I take off the Gasket cover will oil get all over the place?
You know how on the Zetec engine there is this black strip cover along the top that hide the plug wires. You take that off and then pull out the wires. Now when you look inside you see lots of oil all around in puddels where the plugs go into the engine.
And you all want me to replace the gasket (???) ring thingy..lol

I have the V-6 rather than the Zetec in my Contour, so I'll let the experts answer on the specifics. But your symptoms are just like mine with the Saturn. I was changing the plugs, and the #1 came out of the hole covered with oil. Since there was no oil on the electrode of the plug, and I could see the path the oil had taken from the cam cover gasket down into the plug hole, it was clear (after an initial panic) that it was just the gasket (my first thought was it's-the-piston-rings-let's-just-push-it-off-a-cliff). On the Saturn, the gasket "kit" includes a large gasket for the circumference of the cam cover, and a smaller set of rings that go around the plug hole openings on the cover to seal them (and that's what had failed on mine, and sounds like has failed on yours). I assume the Zetec has the same arrangement, but, as I said, check with the experts here. And, no, oil doesn't fly out when you take off the cover; things aren't under pressure there.

Hi..... Yes, if there was oil in the valley where the spark plugs are located, the valve cover gasket was leaking. NO, you will not get oil all over when you take cover off. When I bought this 98 Merc Mystique Zetec 2.0 that I am still restoring, the sparkplugs were immersed in about 3-4 inches of oil. I would suggest replacing the gasket, when engine is cool. Be careful of wiring and connection to oil pressure switch on left side of head near cam pullys (if you have the VCT version). Clean all oil residue from valley and plug wires (even inside connectors if oil was deep). Insure no residue is left from old gasket. Use the new spacers provided with gasket..Works really nice.. Cost was $28 at O'Reillys Auto Parts. FelPro brand Good Luck..Duane Koss / Blue Springs, MO

You are the man!
I'm going to buy that kit and try and fix this!!
Yes, this is the VCT version.. has a lot power for a 2.0L 4Cl car. That wire your talking about was kind of in bad shape. Looked to me like those wire where touching and exposed. So I rapped them tight with that black tape.

Do the spacers come with this gasket online? Can't I just buy this at Autozone or Pepboys?

Hi TronX, Yes, the spacers come with it. O'Reillys is an auto parts output just like AutoZone and others. I usually buy FelPro gaskets. They seems to be the best headgaskets to hold the old Vegas, especially after they were sleeved. I would believe you could get FelPro brand at most places. The Fordonline.com would be good too, but depends if you can wait a few days and pay shipping on top of that price.. Good Luck, Duane in KC

Ahh... Well I looks like PepBoys is the only one in Town that has these parts. They are asking 34$ for the FelPro brand. I asked the guy if this kit came with the spacers and he said it should come with the stem seal valves? Is that the same thing as the spacers?

Hi TronX, FelPro should have everything you need in this gasket kit. When it comes to the spacers, take your time and insert them properly in the gaskets...Good Luck, duane in kc

Man... Some people can really piss me off at times. I called up PepBoys and asked them if they had the kit because the other Auto place in town had the kit for 59$ and they needed to order it. I don't like to order parts before I get to see them in my hands. So anyway I drove 45 minutes to PepBoys because he said they had some in stock. I asked him 3 times in fact In more than one way if they had the part before I was going to travel so far away. Turns out when I got there there was another guy and he was searching for it in the computer. This guy only had a listing for the Gasket from FelPro. I asked him if he thought there should be other parts with that and he said it looks like there is only the one part and that it's not in stock so I'd have to order it. I was getting pissed when he said they would need to order the part, but I was being the man and then asked him about the Valve stem thingy. He could not find a part number for it on this car and said it might be one of those Ford only parts. I just looked at him and said the other guy on the phone said they had the part here and I drove 45 minutes to pick those parts up. I don't think I'll be ordering those from here in the furture, good luck and walked out. They also did not carry the motor mounts...sigh
Show me the part numbers or kits so that I can buy these parts online...PLEASE!
