So, do you blame the customers for not speaking English, or the business owner for catering to the non-English speaker? Why bother learning the language if your environment is adapting itself to you?
I blame the owners for making it easier for these people not learn the language. I understand that they make more money if they accomidate these people, but when an english speaker has a hard time reading and understanding what is there then I think there is a problem. When I have to search for the english or have to try to understnad spanglish thats a problem.

I believe this country is based on immigration and without it this country is nothing. Nobody would be here if it wasn't for immigration. There is no official language and there shouldn't be one. I just want to slap people that say "learn english." If you were in the army and you got moved out to France would you like it if they didn't want you in there because you couldn't speak French. Its not like you can just learn a language overnight. Why should they have to learn english? Because you can't understand them? Well why don't you learn their language then if it bothers you so much.
There are too many uppity people in the US...

The Army thing is different. In fact, the military encourages it's soldiers stationed overseas to learn the local customs and languages and encourages you to adopt much of that so you do blend into the society.
First, we didn't invade France or Germany (well, not recently, LOL) essentially we are there based on a treaty. So in essence, US Soldiers are "guests" of the French or the Germans.
However, when I was stationed in Germany for three years, I wanted to communicate with the natives, so I took night classes at the Volkshochschule (Adult Learning)
I don't think anyone of us expects immigrants to be instantly fluent in English. However, we do expect that if you CHOOSE to live here that you also try to learn English.

well you can come and slap me then. it has nothing to do with being uppity. it just gets me fired up when i've been here my whole life (and i'm not claiming i'm part of a lineage of one of the original families to be here or any crap like that), and some japanese people who own a business (so they must have been here a while) sit around and talk japanese in front of me. obviously i would be slightly upset that i can't understand them. if it upsets them that they can't understand english-speaking people, they should learn english (like most americans would be expected to know, so they can communicate in america).

just be glad that you have the time, money, and low stress life that you have to be able to spend time on the internet talking about horsepower and miniscule car mods. not saying people should not be restricted into your country but that some sympathy is due to those who don't can't aford food or clothes let alone superchargers. i would try illegally immigrating if i was some desperate mexican.
it seems as though some people on this forum don't realize how hard it really is to get into your country. i am a canadian with a comp. sci. degree and i can't even get in. if i want to work in your country, then the employer must prove that local talent can't fill my position first. this makes it all but imposible for the average or even most above average people to cross your border.
as an aside, if you think that the spanish/english thing is a big deal, you should see the kind of friction french/english causes up here.

Every time we have sent an army to France it is because THEY did not want to speak German...they apparently found English preferable because they invited us back.
This country IS based on immigration. And historically, all the previous groups have largely come to speak English. Took some time but each realized that English was the language of government, medicine, law, buisiness, aviation, whatever and to suceed it was best to learn it. Same holds true today...those not adapting are only holding themselves back...

I too am uppity then, because I feel that we shouldn't have to make tests and other things in different languages. If I were to go to another country that didn't speak english I would try and learn the customs and language, so that I would not offend anyone. It's one thing if you go for a short time, it's another if you are planning on being in that country for a long period of time. Yes, this nation did start out from immigration, since then we have had slavery, a civil war, along with many other wars(all of which have never been on U.S. territory), womens rights, the desegregation of schools and such. So things do change over time, and we as a society need to stop looking in the past for answers, but instead look in the present and future.
On a side note, I am fine with legal immigrants, if they are willing to try and adapt to the society and try to make it better in some way. Those that come here illegal upset me even more, because 1. they don't pay taxes 2. if they drive and get in an accident the other person will most likely have to pay even if it is not their fault 3. they take the money they get and return or send it back home(most cases)
