Well, for those of you who read my last post ("Can Someone PLEEEEEEEEEEASE Help Me...."), you know my story.

In any case, my mechanic is now telling me that "there seems to be a torque converter lock-up." This is the idea I suggested to him MONTHS ago. The car is also still throwing a Power Steering Switch CEL, as it has been before. There are currently no other CEL codes.

Two questions:

(1) Would the Power Steering Switch contribute in any way to stalling?

(2) Anyone know how to disconnect the torque converter on a 95 GL? (I had this done on my old Chevy Cavalier, but my mechanic says it's not as easy on the Ford and he "can't" do it. He says it would involve "cutting" the wires, rather than just "unplugging" it as in the Chevy.)

Many thanks again!

the tranny in the chevy just had an external wire that led to the solenoid valve that locked and unlocked the torque converter.

The ford transmission has all its electronics inside the transmission and its controlled through one large harness that connects to the computer. The only way to disable the troque converter would to locate the wire responsible for working the torque converter in the wire harness and cutting it. Certainly a simple fix, but could take an entire day to locate the one wire in the harness.

I'm sure your mechanic would do it for you if you were willing to pay his labor rate for the ammount of time it would take to research the wiring schematics and then locate the wire in the harness. I could see 8 hours or $600 as a conservative estimate. Not worthwhile for something that will only cure the symptom and not the problem.

Again I suggest consulting a transmission shop that is familiar with Ford transmissions to get their opinion or maybe see if they can give you a free estimate to troubleshoot the problem.

I simply cannot afford these costs, and the car is probably not worth spending that much dough on at this point. That's why I'm in search of someone who knows which wire it is.

(1) If the Power Steering Pressure switch has failed it can cause stalling during low speed manuvers such as parking.
This switch tells the PCM to command the IAC Valve to open and raise your idle,
whenever you turn the wheels and the pressure in the Power Steering increases.

(2) Torque converter lockup is not just one solenoid.
It is also a combination of valves in the valve body.
If your problem is in the Torque Converter circuit, then you may need to have the Valve Body rebuilt.

just trade it in, take what they give you and don't tell the dealer about your problem.

That's the plan.
If the trade-in covers the sales tax, I'll be pleased.

I think you guys should at least try and fix the easy, cheaper fixes first to see how they work.
Clean the MAF, replace plugs and wires, and she how she goes from there.
Can't hurt to try.
