Next week, I'm saddling up the SVT to drive cross-country to visit an old college roommate in Calgary - about 5k miles roundtrip.

Just seeing if others can think of things that I should do but that I have overlooked in prepping my car for this drive.

I had the scheduled maintenance on Monday (75,000 miles); am cleaning the TB and installing a new air filter tomorrow; tires look okay (although I'll need to replace them when I get back, probably), spent last weekend giving it a thorough cleaning...

Anything else anyone can recommend?

Check the air in your spare. Sucks to have a flat tire and find a flat spare too.

Awesome advice. Found out the hard way. Spare wasn't flat but pretty low. Check it once a year now.

I carry an electric air pump & a repair kit. Nuttin' like running over some road debris in the middle of nowhere & getting more than one flat. Happened to me when traveling with the women & towing a trailer. Had to repair three tires on the road. Woulda been f&*(ed otherwise.

If you will need tires AFTER the 5,000 mile trip, get them now. Nothing like the feel fresh rubber on unfamilliar roads in a rainstorm.

Some tire places will give you a 30 day trade in for free replacements if you don't like the tires. Try out a set of touring tires then trade in for some performance tires when you get back. 5000 free miles & minimal tread wear on touring tires. Kinda bad karma though.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

i just got back from a road trip visiting like 10 colleges all on the east coast- followed my dad in his jeep liberty with my contour. for me, the essentials were CD's...and since I'm pretty tired of all of the ones i have right now, i wish i had made some different cd's to listen to, because my drive was many, many hours of nothing but music (not that im complaining)

Do a search as many have discussed this topic in the past.

Do you still have the original black plastic impeller water pump in your SVT? If so, I'd look at replacing it as you're right in the mileage window for the majority of failures with that **** part. It's no fun whatsoever to have it go away from home. BTDT

My trip items usually include, above and beyond what's already been mentioned:
- cell phone
- gloves
- flashlight
- Bottled water to drink
- choclate bars and Worthers candy (quick sugar hit when tired 1-3 hrs after lunch)
- water for rad.
- 1-2 quarts of oil
- torque wrench with socket for lug nuts
- air compressor (not usually necessary)
- tire gague (service stations are usually inaccurate)
- an old drop sheet to put on the ground if I've got to crawl under the car.
(can't crawl under my SVT w/GC's however)

Have a great trip.

Regards, Alan
