Just picked up the wife's 98 Mystique (zetec, ATX) after 8 WEEKS in the tranny shop (two rebuilds, first one lasted about 35 miles) and two leaks. There is a drone noise I notice a little while going straight, which gets worse if you move the wheel left, but disappears when turning the wheel more to the right. I am thinking wheel bearing, but, here is the weird thing. I notice from about 20MPH on, but at freeway speeds (above 60ish, I was doign 70-75), it does not exist any what-so-ever. Ideas?

Does sound like a bearing. Mine goes away at higher speeds too. Someone posted to check a bearing, lift the car and turn the wheel where you think the bearing is bad. Put your hand on the strut and feel for vibration, or roughness. That'll give you which side is bad,,, but that doesn't sound very scientific to me. Does the noise sound like it's coming from a wheel, not the center of the car??

It does sound like it's comoing from the wheel. It sounded perfect before going in. I just had new tires put on a few hundred miles before the tranny went, and it was very quiet and smooth. I am figuring probably a couple hundred bucks to fix it, which is just what I don't need after rebuilding the tranny

Mine is making the same noise too, I thought it was the wheel bearings as well, so I went out and bought those today.....good luck to anyone that is planning on changing them, and props to anyone that has, I couldn't do it, after a couple hours I gave up. I took a friend for a ride today who does a lot of work on cars and he doesn't think that's the problem, so I will take it to the shop tomorrow morning to get an idea if they can find anthing since I have to go get my tire back that I am having patched because of a flat on my way over to a friends garage to work on it......only bright point today was that I got my PIAA 510 lights installed....

It sure sounds like a wheel bearing to me. Mine did the exact same thing. If you turn the wheel to the right, and it quits, then it's the passenger side bearing, and vice versa. The bearing cost me about $30, and if you want some directions, I'd be more than willing to help you. I just did mine on my '96 Contour about 3 weeks ago.

How long did it take you??? I just git an alignment today on my 98 MM 2.5V that is having the same problem, there was a not on the ticket that the mechanic thought it was a left wheel bearing... Guy at the counter told me that "the bearings just needed to be repacked"
Is it intricate and what tools do you need?
Thanx 4 the help DMOut

If they took the tranny out the engine/tranny mounts could be screwed up or misaligned. When you turn the wheel you are shoving the whole mamba-jamba up against some metal if it isn't centered or broken. Then all that engine noise goes into the chassis.
