Recently got the P0300 code which pushed the CEL to illuminate. Has anyone had experience with this single code appearing, not in combination with any others. Did a search and not much came up so I am asking here. It's a 1998 2.5 5 speed Mystique. A while ago I also got a camshaft position sensor circuit fault error but not lately..

Thanks!

John

Could be the coil.

How do I narrow down which of the three coil packs to replace? Are they expensive.... What about other components?

Well, I can see that I have just have one coil pack. Is there any known test for it. They are a tad expensive and I would like to be sure before changing it. I have tested my camshaft position sensor with an ohm meter. It registered 370 ohms which is in the expected range of 200 to 900 ohms. Given the reading does it make any sense to replace it? Is there some other test for it?

John

I use an inductive timing light to check for missing.

The Camshaft position sensor can check good and be bad. If you had a code for it check the connector and wiring for problems first, then replace the sensor. This CEL does not come up unless missing pulses are detected.

I have an inductive timing light. How do you use it to check for missing/bad coil operation. After reading the post on Factory Plugs I may just get some. The Autolite ones could possibly be my problem...

Thanks,

John

Well, as time has passed so have some mysteries!

As I last mentioned, I was to replace the wires and plugs with MOTORCRAFT parts. I opened up the IMRC box. It looked good so I closed it up again. I then shot some throttle body cleaner into the engine while running and tried to get the secondaries to open at the same time as I was spraying. Much better! While I was at it I changed the freakin camshaft position sensor as the CEL kept returning. 1 day after the new part was installed it threw the same old code again!
The engine now pulls real strong, no missing even with the AC on! So much better! But it still throws the P0340 Camshaft position sensor circuit failure CEL. It must be the wire harness? Can I direct-wire the sensor to the ECU to bypass the open circuit. If so how....need help here!

regards,

John
