it went out today on the drive home. thermometer (reads heat index) on the rear view mirror said 114 degrees. and i ham driving down I-820 with no a/c icky. first the car started idling rough, then it started to rev itself, then it died a couple of times, the last time i restarted it, i heard a snap. i pulled over and looked under the hood, the comperssor seized and the belt snapped. any rough estimates on how much this will cost? i have never had to replace one.

You have to change the accumulator, orifice tube and on some cars the condenser if it canā??t be flushed. This is because the accumulator is part of the oil supply for the pump and both the accumulator and condenser will be filled with fragments from the old compressor. The orifice tube will be clogged also. I would guess around $800, judging from your description of the heat in your area itā??s could be worth it. Most good autoparts stores have the parts if you want to DIY. Just remember that the system is still under pressure and if you get 134 in your eyes you will go blind. And donā??t vent the gas into the atmosphere (EPA disclaimer).

After the parts are installed the system will have to be evacuated for at least 1 hour to remove moisture before recharging.

Not sure of distance involved or tow charges, but car can be made mobile simply by having a shorter serpentine belt installed (bypassing a/c compressor pulley).

Generally, if the compressor goes on a late model car, you can kiss a $1000 bill goodbye. I had a quote for a rebuilt compressor for my other car of $1000 and that didn't include installation or any other parts.

are you sure its the compressor seized??? as long as the a/c is not in the on position the clutch should let the pulley move.. get another belt and dont have the a/c in the on position.. the belt should turn .. check the old belt and see if there is prior damage to the belt.. if the belt was defective or just plain worn it might have been slipping and this would be the noise you heard and possible damaged the belt and there might not be anything wrong with the compressor... i would try the cheap way out first.......
when i had a a/c comp. go out on a 93 taurus back in 1996, one month out of warranty the dealer wanted $1200 to put in new compressor(it included new accumulator/dryer and the other stuff that goes with it... my compressor was leaking from the seals.. and they dont want to fix the compressor, just replace them... i used to , well once i did it, rebuilt a compressor.. only lasted a month or so... found out it was the wrong type and the oil just flushed into the system and never stayed in the compressor where it was suppose to stay to oil the crank of the compressor.......
