..to install these?
Swearing, vice-grips, using screwdrivers as crowbars and an extra pair of hands gets the job done but surely there's an easier way?

Never really caused a problem in all the times I did brake work. I'd get the bottom started and use a screwdriver to get the top in place.
Off to the brake forum.

Mine were an absolute biatch. I used a very big pair of needle nose pliers and a screw driver if I remember correctly. From now on I take the calipers off at the caliper bracket and don't deal with those POS's.

Yeh, one of many situations where a left-handed friend is useful.
BTW, perry referred me to this thread via a PM, front pad how-to , but unfortunately the pic, Fig 2.3a from Haynes manual, only shows spring removal which is never a problem. Ford manuals, of course, simply advise install spring clip.

I found a light tap with a small hammer at the right moment got me across the goal line.
The "trick" was to not insert the first end all the way until both ends were at least started into the holes. Then I'd tap them in lightly.
After much swearing, of course.
Do the brake shops have a special tool for this kind of thing?
Function before fashion.

I have a medium sized screwdrived with a V notch cut into the tip that I use to remove and replace those otherwise difficult clips. It is real easy with such a tool. The screwdriver is used to pry the clip out of the caliper. The V notch on the screwdriver is used to hold the clip steady while prying.

Just did it this afternoon. Might be wrong, but after getting one end of the spring seated and the then the other tip in the hole I pried the remaining bit behind the caliper bracket with a pair of needle nose pliers. Much easier to put the tips in the whole and then pry on the unseated spring-end rather than fussing with the tips trying to put them in their wee little resting place.

Thanks for the reply Big Jim. I was aware of your custom tool (similar to a dandelion removal garden tool --< ) from a prior search and should have mentioned it in my initial post. I should also try it later this month.
Regards.

If it works it must be ok. Don't know if your bigger (I assume) SVT springs make it easier that way or not.

Are the SVT ones bigger? I've done Focus brakes too and don't remember...
