Need your advice and expertise here, folks.
Brought my car into our local SVT outfit here in Ottawa with a "hooting" noise coming from the engine when cold.
It had made a similar noise last fall, and they repaired it free of charge, saying the tweaked something on the air intake box.

So, I'm figuring it won't be much this time, either.

Wrongo!

They tell me I need a new IAC valve, a throttle body cleaning, and a PCM upgrade.

BTW, the car is a 98 SVT w/58K miles on the clock.

You probably need a new IAC. I tried cleaning mine last winter when it was moosing with no success. VERY easy to replace for a DIY.

TB cleaning = Ford money grab. I wonder what they want to charge for that. Yeah, you probably need it. Just get a can of carb cleaner and a few rags and do it yourself.

PCM reflash? Dunno, maybe, maybe not.

Or, go to the FAQ area on the main page and look up the "Throttle Hang" fix. People say it helps with their moosing.

I just don't think the car is "moosing" is the widely accepted definition of the term.

The noise I was getting sounded like a belt squeaking, not a fog-horn like belch.

I just have a feeling that I'll get the car back, and it'll keep on squeaking away on cold starts, thereby having made the IAC valve replacement a cash grab.

BTW, aren't those supposed to control idle speed and quality? I've had no noticeable TH or bad idle - the car's been great in those respects.

Just the darned cold start squeaking that sounds like belts but I know isn't.

Otherwise, I just find it amazing that everything they've found wrong with the car is suspiciously not covered by my extended warranty...

the reason they replace the iac valve for the squeeling sound or foghor sound or moosing is because of a cap on the iac valve that gets contaminated with dirt, the first attempt at fixing is to clean this muffling devise and if that doesnt work because you can't get just the cap from ford they replace the iac valve. fairly common problem not only on contours but the trucks and also the japanese brand of ford (mazda). the throttle body clean is fairly simple if you are even supposed to clean at all most svt products apply a special coating to the t-body and advise not to clean. I would spend a little time and investigate before letting anyone touch. Now the pcm flash i don't know about your area but were i'm from the flash should be covered as long as the car is not over 8 yrs old or have over 80,000 miles on it. by covered i mean under emission warranty the car came from the factory with. let me know how it goes
