I have a 98 SVT with 130,000 miles. Mostly freeway driven. The other day I turned on the AC while driving down the freeway, and it would not kick in. As soon as I got on the exit ramp, retudcing my speed, it kicked on blowing cold air. Does the AC need recharged? Im not to familiar with AC systems, so all help would be appreciated. I have had the blower resistor issue fixed! Thanks in advance

I also have a 98 SVT, 117,000 miles. Today I was on the toll road and when I had to stop for the toll line it got really hot really fast and it seemed the compressor was not kicking in. As soon as I got up to a cruising speed the cool air was there again, so mine seems the opposite of yours. It also seems like the compressor kicks in harder than it used to and I can feel it more often. Does this happen with you? Also, mine tends to start reving high while in neutral right beforethe cold disappears.
I did recharge it about a month ago and it seemed better, but now I don't think that was the problem. When it kicks in it is still cold. Seems like the compressor maybe. My mechanically inclined father suggested cleaning the throtle position sensor with "Seafoam". Again, not sure if the compressor and idle speed are related, but they happen at the same time. I am going to try the cleaner first.
Are you having any idle speed issue also?

I had a similar problem on my ยจ98 V6 atx. A couple of days ago The top radiator hose blew (while the car was off) and after replacing that, (Its the hose with three or four arms branching off) not only does my car run cooler, (was running at M. Now its at the O) but my A/C compressor doesn't kick out when going up a hill anymore. Go figure. John

This is not enough info.
Try the A/C under various conditions.
If it is low on freon, it will short cycle the most at idle when cool out (morning).
If the engine is acting up on acceleration it may be the TPS.
If the belt or clutch was slipping you would normally see white smoke.

Without knowing what you mean exactly about "Not kicking on" it also could be a vacuum leak. The selector (Fllor/A/C/Etc) works on vacuum. A leak in a hose or the selector mechanism can cause something similar to what you experienced. My knob was pulled out a little (had something hanging on it, don't ask) and when I accelerated, the air stopped coming out of the vents, let off the gas, cold air came back. Removed hanging object, pushed in knob, worked o.k. again.
So could be any of the listed things in the other posts too.

just the other day my 93 taurus had a similar problem.. i checked the freon and it was up to proper pressure... it seemed to be vacuum related... i got on the alt.autos.ford news group and asked for advice and was told it was the TPS, throttle position sensor.. so like the other poster staed his father mentioned, it might be the TPS needs to be cleaned... it might be that as the TPS picks up the position of the throttle and tells the compressor to cut off at times, which is normal.. like when giving it gas so your engine can have all its power to drive the car when gunning it..... i might try the TPS and clean mine off also..... it, the problem with the a/c comes and goes.....
