My 96 Contour's underside had been creaking and moaning for a while now. I gone to a couple of suspension shop. The diagnose were all "you strut is leaking! you need new strut"!!!

Seems they all agree on what's wrong: front strut. But the quote I got are all over the place. Ranging all the way from $400-$800 (a lot of it were labor though). And they all say their strut were the best in ride quality and control (all offer lifetime warranty anyway). Now, all these are NOT the dealership and they are NOT talking about replacement using original parts. I'm begining to wonder how much of it were hot air about these after market struts just to milk the most money out of my pocket. Do I REALLY need extra "support" strut? Wouldn't it make the car ride stiffer than designed for?...

$800 for a strut installed is robbery. I have never heard of a "support strut" for Contours. I would shop around some more. Sometimes the smaller Mom and Pop shops will do the work a little cheaper.
Good luck.

Where are you located?

I'm sure you could find a couple local CEGers in your area who would do the work for much less ($50 or less for one strut install).

April..installing the struts is not a big ordeal, if you can get a friend to help. The write up in the How-To section is really good...and the major tools are available for free at Auto-Zone. You can call Bill Jenkins (Our stock Ford parts discount guy) and get good SVT struts for around $65 apiece. Take a weekend...your crew...and for under $300...have a car that rides better than new. The cheapest "shop" I have heard of is Meineke...who quoted a friend of mine $600. But $50-60 in labor per wheel is probably average.

Sounds like a volunteer here.

I agree whole heartily that doing the job with a friend's help is a win-win situation. You win because you save money and learn from doing it. Your friend win because they earn money( coffee money ) and become a better friend.
