yo whatup everyone, this is my first post on this site. i got a 98 SE contour sport like 2-3 months back. so far its been in the shop more than in my garage. its my first car and so far im not very happy with it.
so far these have been my problems: 5 safety recalls that shouldve been fixed when it was traded in, gas filler neck was crooked, had to cut gas tank in half and reweld it, THREEEEEEEE completely differe cadilidac converters in the car clogged and changed.(i dont mean one got clogged, then replaced and clogged again, i mean tehre are 3 cadilidac converters in this car, must be a common problem that tehy get clogged), my torque converter was completely shot, so i needed a new transmission. somehting about a intake over-ride??? whatever that is it wasnt any good. my brake rotors had to be replaced, they sed they did but all they did was ground em cuz htey were warped. i needed a new steering column cuz the ignition would stick in when i took the key out. my ac didnt work. i had a leak in my engine coolant, causing the car to overheat excessively, i need new trunk pistons cuz the. and thats all of them.
if anybody has any questions on why there cel is on, i can probly help considering my car basically has brand new parts. we evened tried filing this tash heap as a lemon. if your engine bucks, and u get rev to 5 1/2 grand from accelerating, chances are your torque converter is blown. if u breaks suck from taking a exit on a highway, if they like pulsate, get ur rotors fixed, chances are they are warped. i hope my list of problems will help u dudes with cel's on.
and by the way, all those problems up there, they were repaired for free, my family ownz ppl who try to screw em over, haha

Welcome to CEG, sounds like (unfortunatley) you bought a used vehicle that was not maintained by the previous owner. We invite you to the site to gain a wealth of information about the Contour/Mysteque/Mondeo. I currently have 117k miles on my contour and she runs like a champ because I have maintained the car from the beggening. Never a problem with the ATX, or cats and its the best car I have ever owned. Sounds like the previous owner drove the car into the ground and then you bought it.. good luck..

Ford brought the Contour and Mystique over from Europe (where it's known as the "Mondeo") to replace the late, unlamented Topaz and Tempo...Ford's answer to the Chrysler K Car! That fact aside, the Contour and Mystique are vastly superior in every way...a real world car *and* world beater! A large number of the same people that would drive a Tempo found themselves in a Contour; not knowing (or appreciating) how nice these cars are. Of course *we* know better, right?
I've had a number of German cars, notably an Audi Fox, 2 VW Jettas and 2 VW Passats. My Mystique, which I (ironically) bought as a second car) has every bit the road manners and panache that those cars did...despite the fact that it has an automatic transmission. Beggars can't be choosers I guess.
I got a really good deal on my car and though the previous owner was quite anal about getting the oil changed regularly he wasn't attentive about things that us enthusiasts and real car lovers would be. There were little signs of benign neglect...window mouldings that should've been replaced, big clunky all-weather wiper blades, that kind of thing. There were also clear signs that he'd looked after the car. Every receipt for every service was stuffed into the glove compartment plus he had touched up religiously every little nick in the paint. I had the timing belt and catalytic converter replaced and though it was a big bill I know it wasn't the car that let me down.
Hope you enjoy your new car.

Don't tell me that they actually cut your gas tank in half and rewelded it!!?? They should have replaced it if that was the case. If I Remember Correctly (IIRC), there was a recall for the neck, but I think it was more of a replacment of the neck and had nothing to do with the gas tank.

Yeah, we have two precats and one main cat. The only reason I can think of that they would change all three at one time would be because one or both of them started falling apart and clogged the main cat. That one they were just throwing parts at the car.

There is nothing in our automatic trannys called a "intake over-ride". There is however a bypass piston the valve body, but... well at least it works now!

Sounds like you were a little ripped off. I would hope that all this was under warrenty!
Originally posted by VoOdOoVyPeR: i needed a new steering column cuz the ignition would stick in when i took the key out.
I would think that they could have just replaced the switch, but if it was under warrenty then oh well it was on there dime!
Originally posted by VoOdOoVyPeR: i had a leak in my engine coolant, causing the car to overheat excessively,
I sure hope you was able to get that fixed!!

Well it looks like you did not finish saying what you were saying, but I think I know where you are going. Let me guess, the trunk would not open. If so, you have just made a small adjustment to the latch and viola! trunk opens!

Well, that is a good thing!
Sounds like a dealer did not do any of this work. I mean, I know of shady dealers, but not one that would take a plasma cutter to a gas tank then weld it back. Then the recalls that should have been done... oh well~~~~
Welcome aboard! Always great to see new faces. So where ya from anyway?

Actually, I owned an 86 Tempo 5spd that I drove for about 180k mi on two clutches (put in a new motor at 62k after driving through too deep a puddle). I drove it home 20 miles with bent rods. It didnā??t let go until I hit the driveway. It never overheated or had to be towed home in all the years I owned it. Sold it to my mail man for $500 and he drove it to 232K mi before the clutch went (he couldnā??t see putting $600 into a $500 car). The Tempo was not a bad car it just fell behind the times.
Replaced the Tempo with the 98 Myst LS. I have 87k miles on it. It has been towed three times. I drive it on the same roads as I did the Tempo and at the same speeds. The Myst is maintained to the highest standards (mine). Anything that broke the dealer did during the countless recalls. I just put in a Torque converter and an updated Valve Body (that corrects the design flaw in the converter bypass and regulator valve.. that caused the TC to fail).
So where the #### am I going with this?
Well I love my Myst LS, handling, power, and comfort. I just hate what ford (Jac the ripper) did to it (water pump for example)
Do I want the Tempo back?? Not really, Is the Myst going to go five more years and another 100k mi??? I doubt it.
jeff
have you fixed your ford lately?

OK, I gotta ask... did you even test drive this car before you bought it? At least a couple of the problems you described should have been immediately evident on a quick rip around the block. It sounds like you bought someone else's problems.
Enough negativity... good luck getting the car fixed, and when running right, these cars can be great. Stick around, and you'll learn more than you ever thought possible about your car.

yeh i did test drive it with my pops b4 we bought. it ran fine and teh CEL was OFF. we picked up a day or two after. i went to wal-mart with my friend only to notice the CEL was on. the dealer didnt give us crap in the beginning, buuuttt they did start to be retards about it. Like the day we figured out something was wrong with the tranny, my dad had called the dude up to see if hed go on a test drive with me and try to "feel" whathte problem was, tehy guy sed ya over the phone, but when i got there, he sed no. he sed there was nothing in there power they could do, and that they "had no idea what is wrong with it" and dont have the right tools to fix anything. i figured the guy was jsut bs'ing cuz they fixed everything else for us.
and in reply to the dude about the gas filler neck. it wanst a recall exaclty, the lady we talked to sed it was labeled "a program", jsut a name for it i guess. she sed it woudlve been a recall, but there werent enough cases in which people had this problem. its the same with teh fuses in the glove box making a connection and smoking up the car, its dangerous yes, but there havent been enough cases in which this has happened to label it a safety recall.

I'm a little confused about the gas tank. Cutting and welding it seems highly unlikely. It is made of plastic.

hmm they are?...i jsut talked to my mom. the dealership is half-retarded i think. she just sed that they cut the gas tank in half to take it out, then they put a whole new one in, but we have it on record that they cut it in half and welded back together. the idiot head of services in the dealership even told me that. she also sed that gas tanks arent made of platic. But the other dealership we brought it to sed there was a brand new gas tank in it.......also, its a smaller one than the original, it only takes around 10-13 bux to fill it from almost empty. but its good on gas so i dont care. i dont know what to believe tho, my mom is a dunce with cars and the gas tank being plastic would make sense, so i dont know.
