My car was having trouble shifting. I added trans fluid, which help for a few hours. When I hit the interstate the O/D OFF light started blinking. Any ideas as to why? Did I put in too much fluid? This is getting annoying.

What year and model is your car? How many miles are on your car? I assume it is an automatic transmission.

Take it to a shop. When the OD light flashes somethings wrong and it's probably overheating. I've got a 98 'Tour with a bad ATX (torque convertor) right now, and driving it just 60 more miles after the first signs burned the clutches out... more $$$ out of my wallet. frown

The ATX's in our cars are dogs and are prone to overheating. I'm installing a Level 10 rebuild kit and external tranny cooler next week. I reccommend the aftermarket cooler to everyone with an ATX.

BTW, how's the fluid look? If it's burnt (brown, strong smell) you're due for a rebuild. By that point it's too late. If it's still pink you may be able to pour in some Tranny Dr. or something and pull through. Sounds like your clutches, though... if you put too much fluid in the tranny, it won't shift right. Same thing if it's very low.

Well I think the fluid is too high, would that cause the O/D light to flash?

Ford will put a reman unit in for about $2200. Rebuilds will usually run $1100 to $2000. Like I say, aftermarket cooler = good idea. wink

Try Levelten.com. They specialize in ATX upgrades and I hear they do an awesome job on our cars. I'm ordering their rebuild kit this week and having a local shop install it for $1100. Total $1575... not bad at all (considering).

My cousin has the exact same car. Her ATX blew out, was over $1100 to fix. Plan on spending at least a grand on your tranny
