look here, I had the same problem except on my SVT, which is now sitting at HMS waiting about $2,000 worth of rebuild. Not to scare you or anything, but my car showed a lot of the same syptoms as yours. A Rod bearing is bad, so I'm looking at new crank, rods, bearings, seals blah blah blah.. about $1,000 in parts and about $1,200 in labor (which I have a feeling is a really damn good deal).. Anyways, like I said, don't wanna scare you but, this is my situation. Oh and the SVT is a 2000 with 51,000 miles on it.

Tell me about it, having just graduated college w/student loans up the butt needing to be paid back, $2,200 isn't really something I can afford right now. Thank god for a nice dad. Terry Haines recommended I get a used, low mileage motor, however, finding those for the SVT is pretty difficult. However he thought if I COULD find one it would be about $1,000 plus labor to swap. So maybe if it is a bad crank/bearings, you could find a "used" cougar motor for a decent price and save a bunch of money. I'd try to get a hold of terry and see if he can help you out at all.
