My car is been getting noisier the last couple of
weeks. Every time I go over a vertical bump, esp
a speed bump, I get this clunking sound from my
rear suspension....it almost sounds like my trunk
door is still open but it isn't. Any ideas?
Maybe my 22mm rear sway bar is rubbing my gas tank
when I have a full tank? Could it be something
with my rear control arms? They used to have
the bushing squeaks but now I can only hear the
major clunking.
I appreciate any suggestions?

First check to see that the spare tire is secured with the bolt-down attached, and that the jack is secure.
Under the car is a few possibilities, check exhaust, it's hung on rubber, move up and down and see if it hits. The rear sway bar link bushings are grommet type rubber parts in the lower arm. When they get crushed, clunks occur over bumps, especially at slow speeds. They can be replaced at reasonable cost. Good Luck

I had a clunky sound too. I would check the rear sway bar links. But beware, they do not come off or go back in easy.... The bushings are in the rear lower control arm and it took me an hour to get them back in, just no room to maneuver them..
Just an idea. If you can get them replaced it might help...

Just curious, both rear wheels off the ground while you were replacing?

Some others have posted cases where the sway bar bushing support brackets have torn free of the chassis with the 22 mm bar. Just another idea in case it's none of the above...

I had the same problem. Went to the shop under ESP and had the links replaced as well as the rear struts. It was still clunking in cold weather over speed bumps and the like.

Now the weather is warn it went away. I am guessing my clunking is related to bushing material and cold weather.

Good luck.
