Last fall the check engine light on my 95 Contour 4cyl. would come on during acceleration on very warm days. After I let up the light would go off. The problem gradually got worse. Eventually the car started running rough. As the weather got cooler the problem went away and the car ran fairly normal, but was a little hesitant on acceleration. Now the the temperatures have warmed up again the problem is back and the car runs very rough all the time. The check engine light still only comes on once in a while though. Oh, it will also sputter and back fire on acceleration from a stop. Any ideas? Thanks

Yes. Pull the codes.

Could be a missfire. That's bad for the engine. Find out what the codes are asap.
They are easy to pull on OBD-I, no need for a diagnostic tool.

I hate to ask the obvious stupid question, but how do you pull the codes without a diagnostic tool on ODB-I? I did a search and didn't see any postings?

Moonlight Blue 1996 Mercury Mystique GS , Zetec engine, ATX.  No mods. (Well, OK, one mod.  Before I got rid of my previous car, a 1994 Tempo, I swapped radios.  I liked the Tempo's radio better.  That counts as a mod, doesn't it?  I also kept one of my Tempo's wheels to use as a spare.  I hate those stupid ?compact? spares that come with modern cars.  Does this count as a mod?  If so, I guess I have two mods.  Replaced burned/melted blower switch and connector on 19 February 2002 with a 1P3T toggle switch from Marvac and a Molex connector from Rat Shack; I guess this now makes three mods.)
