obviously the 225/50 will bulge vs 225/45

I think it depends more on the speed rating and style of tire that you get... I have had 225/50/15s on my Stock 98 MM 24 V M for a long while... My Yokohamas were Avid "T" rated touring tires and buldged big time... My Falkens are "V" all weather high performance and there is no buldge...
