The Haynes manual states that when replacing the timing belt for the first time that the tensioner spring and spring retaining pin must be installed. I bought the tensioner, tensioner spring but do I need the spring retaining pin that the manual says that I need? The spring retaining pin is a bolt that the spring is hooked on to.
I have searched the forum archives and gained a lot of useful information. But no mention of having to buy and install the spring retaining pin.

the spring and the pin are used to tension the belt only and do not stay installed on the engine.
we did not use the pin on my car. the spring is suppose to be of a certain tension so it tensions the belt corectly.
we used a punch to put in the pin hole and hook the spring to. also this allowed use to pull on the spring a bit more, punch was smaller then the bolt hole, to make sure we tensioned the belt

You can leave them on the engine if you want, they won't hurt a thing. PM me tom, if you need the part number for the pin.

you are better off taking them off, they could come free and jam the belt up, that wouldn't be any good

A tight spring and a threaded bolt aren't likely to come loose.

Actually when I went to the Ford dealer the pin and spring were only listed for use on the pre-98's.

I guess we don't need a pin or spring.
