I'm looking to build a box for a subwoofer to be mounted in the rear deck of my contour. What kind of pipe should I use for a port tube? Will PVC work? Does it matter what I use?

i dont know much about boxes but i built my first one today...i got 2 150w Advent subs and a 300w Jensen amp. I putone porthole in my box that made out of PVC and I'm hoping it works,I don't see why it wouldn't..I havent tested it out yet but when I do I'll let ya know.. PVC,porthole, they're both plastic so I'm givin it a try.

Yes, you can use PVC for the ports. Just make sure it is the correct demensions.

You can also make it vented. but thats more difficult for your first box.

What size PVC did you use and how long , i might try that but not sure I've got 2 concept 12's they do ok if i keep the seat down. the steel plate in the back seat is a pain in the butt.

You have to figure out the Port volume for your concepts. Every sub is made differently. eg. A 12" Vega Series needs a 4in Diameter X 10inches long in a 2 CU FT box to be tuned to 35 HZ. A 15" CV Stroker needs 2 6In Diameter X 18inches long in 5.4 CU ft box to be tuned to 35 HZ.

If you have the spec sheet for your subs it should say it on there. Volume and port volume or Diameter and length

A vent is a port and a port is a vent. If you are thinking there is a difference based on shape, don't. They two terms are the same.

Port length is determined by a couple of things. The port area, the volume of the enclosure, and the tuning freq. More volume of displacement from the driver requires more port area. A small box will always require a longer port thn a larger box, all else being equal.

I dont know the exact dimensions of my port but I'm guessing its about 3 inches long and maybe 1/2" thick and 2" wide. I'm not tryin to make a pro box I just threw a bunch of wood together and put screwes in it...Took me about 2 hours to cut everything, screw it together and put the subs in it and wire everything. I tested it on my stereo in my room and it doesnt sound too strong. I noticed when I put my hand over the port it sounded like it bumped more. My box is pretty big, It about 35" across, 20" high, and 15" back. Is there anything I should change?
