Are we combining the numbers with the Cougar (NECO) engines? They have Duratec's too. And Mondeo's.

Bought the SVT used Oct 14, 2000. Had 94,000 hwy miles on it. Met the lady that used to own it, said she never once had a problem with it. My story is like this. Less than an 30 minutes after signing the papers, waterpump went. One week to repair at Phil Long Ford in Colorado Springs, Co. Upon return of the car, noticed the brakes needed to be done. Salesman said brakes were new, they never did fix them after approx three weeks of having the car. At 106,000 miles, the engine went. Dealership said the valves began collapsing out of time, and the engine ate it's self apart. I saw it when they tore it down, and it was disgusting what it did to itself. No loss of oil pressure, or oil used at the time noe increase of temp. Just stopped, didn't even hear it lock up when it went, just froze. Took one month to replace under extended warranty at MEDVED Ford L/M in Castle Rock, Co. The engine sat in there shop for one week because, as they said, they didn't know what it was for. There was one CSVT(mine) in there with no engine, I guess this one wasn't blatantly obvious to them. Warranty company found one in Oregon w/ 16,000 miles on it. No problems since then, now have approx 42,000 mile's on it. I've replaced the plugs on it twice since then and at least two always seem to work there way loose after about 400 mile's. I'll tighten them back down and have no problems again. Also, no apparent damage to heads to cause this. Two months after getting new engine, the transmission had to be rebuilt. A bolt broke loose inside making it stay in third. AAMCO rebuilt it under warranty. One month downtime again. Three month's later, wiring issues. The junction block for the starter/battery hot wire was somehow crushed. Caused a short, which caused the starter to get fried. Phil Long Ford replaced it under warranty. I told them that I heard, when it went, what sounded like a hot wire popping off of metal. They said it was the starter, and it was fixed. Three days later, the same thing. Starter was turning over without the key in the ignition and continued to run with engine on. That lasted about two mile's and went again. Took it back the next day, had the car for about a week and a half. Finally fixed and they even paid for the rental this time. No other problem's since. 99 SVT dealer told me worn bearings in the bottom end @ 35K-replaced under warranty in about 6 days. I'm wondering how they got an SVT engine that fast...I'm still worried to this day that it's not an SVT motor, need to get it on a dyno. Anyway, they took me for a clutch too, it may have needed it, but my guess is they wanted to make some more money since the engine was already out. clutch felt fine to me. I'm 22K strong on this motor. md1@umbc.edu Baltimore Maryland

'99 SVT Contour (not quite mine yet) 56,000 miles

Trying to buy this car from my buddy, swapped my '99 Maxima with him for a day to spend some seat time in it, blew the engine.
Extensive internal engine damage, top of pistons 4 and 5 are lunched, debris scored cylinder walls. Extended warranty should cover it, I just hope the car is running by the time my Maxima lease is up. Cool car (other than the lunched motor)

Stockton, Ca. f*** Ford I have a 98 SVT that is the wosrt car I have ever owned. I have always owned Fords. 7 Mustangs and 3 Explorers in 20 years. But never again. Can not justify supporting Ford anymore after this car. Even J.D. Edwards is slamming Ford on quality. Heres the big one, at 57k it spins a bearing and slams a piston into the head. The cost to replace whole motor was freaking $5,100!!!! Ouch. Car is about three years old and it needs a new motor!! (I always take care of my cars by the way so no neglect here). Ford would not do a dam thing for me. This car is literally falling apart as I drive it. I will never buy another Ford again. ****ty warranty period. If a Chrysler, Izuzu or Hyandia, it would still be covered! This car is a pleasure to drive, but would never recommend a Ford to anyone. I'm switching to another company, maybe German. Bye Ford, it was fun.. Other problems: 1. Both headlight assy need to be replaced because they hold moisture (from rain/washing) and fog up. 2. Both Fog lights always blow light bulbs. Don't even bother anymore 3. Power sunroof motor broke at 45k 4. Power window broke at 50k 5. CD play died 6. Paint peeled on both sides, out of warranty but I got them to piant it by complaining loud. 7. Door hinges moan. Ford body shop say's it does not look like an fixed up accident car so groan is just plain bad fitting parts. 8. Tranny linkage cable broke around 40k 9. several recalls for dumb stuff Just all around poor quality. I'm thinking about driving this thing over a cliff and just cutting my losses since keeping it would only throw good $$$ after bad...

Chuck Vashro Email: cvashro@juno.com 1998 Contour SVT # 1031/6535 The first day I owned the car(bought it w/59k), the engine had a knocking sound and check engine light flashing. Dealer towed it back to shop, I waited 2 months for a new SVT motor from Ford. Approximate loss: (dealer stated) $8k . Ran like a champ ever since replacement of motor and god knows what else (haven't looked at the write up in like a year). ~Purchased from: White Bear Acura, MN ~Engine Replaced by: North Country Ford, MN ~All regular maintenence: Tenvoorde Ford, MN (Oldest Ford Dealer in the nation!)
