Hello all!

The check engine light came on at 54,000 miles on my 1998 Contour LX (V6 2.5L engine). I took it to AutoZone and they gave me the following "dealer specific" code: P1131. When I called the dealership, they said they would only tell me what it meant after I brought it in and let them diagnose it -- for $74! I did not say "No" but rather "Hell No!"

Using the wonderful resources on this website, I've found out that this code is: "Lack of upstream heated oxygen sensor switch -- Sensor indicates lean."

Can anyone please provide information as to what kind of work is required to resolve this? Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I found out that there are 4 O2 sensors on the engine, ranging in cost but averaging around $90.

Does anyone know how we could determine which of the 4 has failed (as far as checking voltage, what the voltage should be, is there a visual inspection, etc).

A further search on P1131 will give you all the answers you seek.

P1131 is bank 1 upstream sensor not switching. 99.9% sure it is just the sensor.

This is what my search found:

P1131
is the rear bank(by firewall) upstream/ before the cat. HO2S11! it is a indicates lean code but if your car runs good still you should replace that O2 sensor(HEGO). and i would recommend replacing both upstreams with bosch to $60 a piece.

Is that what you were referring to?

Thanks a million!

Two Techies Talking

Re-setting PCM and seeing if code returns is sometimes a wise move, if you have a code reader or free access thereto.

Edit: Italics phrase added.

Thats the one. As with many cars the Contour O2 sensors can fail. The car may seem to be running ok but in fact the A/F trim can be out with a bad o2 sensor. Fix it as soon as possible. Bosch should be fine. If you have acess to an OBD II scanner you can check the operation of all the O2 sensors to see if they are working.
