OP Temujin New CEG\'er T Joined: Aug 2002 Posts: 26 Canada	I accidently punched a hole in my speaker (RF hpc-2268). How badly will the sound degrade? Also, if I want to block out the bass to the speakers, would wiring the capacitor directly inline with the speaker wires work? The cap wires seem unusually small (18+ gauge?) to be able to handle ~30W (output from an Alpine CDA-7894). Thanks.

There is a reason it is called a dust cap...to keep dust out of the voice coil. However if there is a hole in the basket you have weakened the basket and that can have many effects. You may get a cracking noise, you may get distortion. Basically try it out and see, if it's bad, too bad. If it fine all the better. Also I believe you connect that cap inline on the positive terminals for it to work.

I thought that it was the dust cap / cone is the part that moves air and produces sound. Oh well, might as well try it. I figure I need a 470 uf 60v cap. The calculators on the net show that the crossover frequency is 84.6 Hz, 6db/octave slope. Not bad for $0.58, I guess.
