A few nights ago I was run off the road by some idiot driver who was traveling down the wrong side of the road. I ran up on a median and bottomed out when my tire went into a deep rut causing damage to the lower control arm and a small crack in the transmission case. The crack is really small but enough to cause some leaking. Ford quoted me $3400+tax to fix it. I also took it to Cottman Transmissions to see if it was possible to repair the crack by maybe welding a small piece of metal over it. The guy at Cottman said he couldn't do anything with it because first of all the trasnmission case is aluminum second the
"pressure inside the trasmission is too high and the damage is too close to the cv axle and the differential to be done safely." I finally just ended up putting some Quicksteel over the crack to slow the leak down while I figure out what to do next. It helped some but the transmission fluid is still slowly seeping out around the compound. So what I'm asking is if what I was told by the guy at Cottman is true? Is my only option to get the transmission replaced or get rid of the car? I contacted my insurance company and they said they might pay for a used transmission from another 'Tour with less mileage to be put in. Still I'm just curious. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. BTW this is a '00 Contour SE w/ ATX.

Tee, you would really need to have the tranny replaced. That crack will get bigger, no way around it.

You will really have to weigh your options out and look to see what they are, as to what you should do.

Option 1) Find a lower mileage tour and have the tranny yanked out. Send it off to a tranny shop and have them rebuild it. Cottmans will do this, but they don't like doing it. The place is actually quite fair. They are the ones that rebuilt mine for me. See the thread above titled, "My CD4E Shopping Experience". Cost will depend on the shops labor rates. If all goes well and no work is required on the replacement tranny, I would say a good guess would be between $500 - $850. Somewhere in there. If the replacment unit will require rebuilding itself, then look at somewhere between $1200 - $2500.

Option 2) Buy a remain unit, which is just a completely rebuilt unit, and "find" someone to install it for you. Labor cost will run about the same here.

Notice in Option 2 I have the word "find" in quotes like that! I talked to roughly 10 shops in my area and could not find anyone that would do it. You can of course install it yourself, that is if you are good with a wrench.

Good luck. If you have any other questions you can of course post them here, but feel free to PM if you like.

im not too familiar with the transmission, but cant the cracked part be replaced?

in a few weeks my old, in bad shape tranny will be out, and my new one will be in, with the 3L.

if something can be replaced id gladly pull a part off and give it to you for the cost of shipping.

someone let us know if this is doable?

Yes. The CD4E actually splits into two halfs.

In this case though, I don't think so. Tee has a Ztec and Russell, you have a Duratec. There are too many internal differences, no matter which sides cracked.

That was mighty CEGerish of you though!

Tee, one thing I forgot to mention in my post above....

Check out www.car-parts.com for a tranny. It is basically an on-line junkyard where you can search for parts in your area. I thought this might help you out since Houston is such a large area. It will not have all the yards listed, but it will at least give you an idea of what you can expect to pay for one in your area or even find one.
