I uninstalled Easy CD Creator 5, then went to reboot. Just as it finished shutting down, I got a blue screen with this crap about some error occurring.

"IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

And at the bottom it said:

STOP: 0X0000000A(0X000002DC,0X000000FF,0X00000000,0X80523912)

Is this some sort of corrupted registry? I can't seem to fix it! I tried the 'last known good config' and it still is there.

EDIT: Every time I restart, I get this stupid Windows dialog box asking me to find the install log for Easy CD Creator. I of course cannot because it was already deleted. WTF?!

most of the time its cause of a registry issue, the other times it could be because you swapped a new motherboard or processor, xp, is very strict about pirating xp on my then one computer. and it causes errors to keep you from pirating. Now, this error is usually not seen to often, try to start back up in the last known working configuration. It should boot back up. then restart and see if it works.

I've been doing the Last Known Good Configuration and it starts up fine. But anytime I go to shutdown or restart, I get the stupid blue error screen again.

::chuckles:: XP does not purposely cause errors when you switch hardware, despite what every Linux user in the world might want you to believe. I've installed an entirely new motherboard and processor into my current installation of Windows when one of my old ram slots went bad and I was looking to replace the m/b with something decent, and it caused me little to no trouble.

Whenever you get an error like this during Shutdown, 90% of the time it has something to do with legacy drivers. It times past when Windows was still running on top of DOS, whenever it would shut down it would attempt to switch from 32 bit to 16 bit drivers, and often would hang, stall, or error out. With Windows XP being built on top of NT technology, it doesn't necessarily do that, but getting an error like that, citing an IRQ problem, generally has something to do with the failure of a driver for a specific piece of hardware to respond to a memory garbage collector--or at least that's been my experience.

Windows makes automatic backups of its system state each and every time you boot. You may attempt to perform a "System Restore" dating back to a couple days before you started having your shutdown problems. If that doesn't fix it, get a copy of your Windows cd, boot to it on bootup, and then select the "Repair Installation" option.

Backup any vital data before performing the latter option.

Cheers,
Tim

System Restore lets me go 5 days back but they all fail to load! I checked the Event Log and there's something about the 'True Vector Engine'. That is from Easy CD Creator.

"The description for Event ID ( 1 ) in Source ( True Vector Engine ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: ."

If I do the System Repair thing off my XP CD, will it wipe the whole hard drive clean, or only the System files?

Here is the info out of the Kernel Debugger help file.

Bug Check 0xA: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
[This is preliminary documentation and subject to change.]

The IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL bug check has a value of 0x0000000A. This indicates that Windows or a kernel-mode driver accessed paged memory at DISPATCH_LEVEL or above.

Parameters
The following parameters are displayed on the blue screen.

Parameter Description
1 Memory referenced
2 IRQL at time of reference
3 0: Read
1: Write

4 Address which referenced memory

Cause
This bug check is issued if paged memory (or invalid memory) is accessed when the IRQL is too high.

The error that generates this bug check usually occurs after the installation of a faulty device driver, system service, or BIOS.

If you encounter bug check 0xA while upgrading to a later version of Microsoft® Windows®, this error might be caused by a device driver, a system service, a virus scanner, or a backup tool that is incompatible with the new version.

Resolving the Problem
If a kernel debugger is available, obtain a stack trace.

To resolve an error caused by a faulty device driver, system service, or BIOS

Restart your computer.
Press F8 at the character-based menu that displays the operating system choices.
Select the Last Known Good Configuration option from the Windows Advanced Options menu. This option is most effective when only one driver or service is added at a time.
To resolve an error caused by an incompatible device driver, system service, virus scanner, or backup tool

Check the System Log in Event Viewer for error messages that might identify the device or driver that caused the error.
Try disabling memory caching of the BIOS.
Run the hardware diagnostics supplied by the system manufacturer, especially the memory scanner. For details on these procedures, see the owner's manual for your computer.
Make sure the latest Service Pack is installed.
If your system has small computer system interface (SCSI) adapters, contact the adapter manufacturer to obtain updated Windows drivers. Try disabling sync negotiation in the SCSI BIOS, checking the cabling and the SCSI IDs of each device, and confirming proper termination.
For integrated device electronics (IDE) devices, define the onboard IDE port as Primary only. Also, check each IDE device for the proper master/slave/stand-alone setting. Try removing all IDE devices except for hard disks.
If the message appears during an installation of Windows, make sure that the computer and all installed peripherals are listed on the Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility List (HCL).

If you do the repair you shouldn't lose too much... You will have to re-install SP1 and probably some programs. Your best bet is to try and save what you have though. I have done the above on many systems at work, but never an older install that has tons of information, email, and other stuff. Do at your own risk.

Good Luck,

Volcano God

Will I lose My Documents, installed games, Office, etc?

I'm wondering if it is tied in with my removable DVD+RW drive.

Me personally I would remove the DVD drive. I am guessing the stop error is dealing with a driver that was not proper removed during the Un-install of Easy Creator 5.

You should not lose your document and possibly Office stuff, but some games may possibly not survive the restore. Prior to going down that path I would strip your system down to bare minimum and see if you can get into the O/S.

Did you try last known good, or coming up in safe mode via pressing F8 just after going through POST?

Safe Mode & Last Known Good still cause the STOP error at shutdown/restart. The problem is that the computer is not fully shutting down each time and hence I can't try to correct the problem.

I also uninstalled the DVD driv

Looks like I'm doing a system repair. God dammit.
