If the "X" tool you're referring to is the one I think it is, I agree with you 100% - I had one & couldn't even use it!!

What you need to use is a set like this one:

Better Type Fuel Disconnect Tool Set (I got mine at Pep Boys)

The injectors are prolly clean internally, I just used a "diaper" type rag, wet with carb cleaner, and carefully wiped the deposits off the tips of the injectors and generally cleaned up the outside of them before I put the new o-rings on and re-assembled the fuel rail. A can of fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank after you've finished the UIM/LIM clean-up sure wouldn't hurt either.

I plan on changing the oil soon after i put everything back together should i put injector cleaner in before i change the oil, or doesn't it matter?

also ford gave me this gasket for the TB... but maybe its for a post98? (original is on the left)

The part the dealer gave you is for an SVT.

i took another peek at the exhaust manifolds from underneath and i don't think i want to bother with taking them completely off. so if i just hold a vacuum up while i'm cleaning them out and suck all the dust etc. out i should be fine right? i don't want anything getting into the engine...

incase i wasn't clear by 'cleaning them out' i meant gutting them. maybe nobody answered because they thought i was actually wiping them down or something?

There is a risk that some of the ceramic dust could find it's way into an open exhaust valve so proceed at your own peril. Many CEG'rs (myself included) have gutted the pre cats this way without any problems, so I'd say the chances for engine damage are pretty minimal, especially if your careful and vacume often.

Just take them off and do it. Its a PITA, but not as bad as it looks. A couple extra hours doing it the right way, or the possibilty of destroying your engine.....you decide.

Without taking it off the engine, you can't be sure that you removed all of the catalyst material. That is very important. You need to remove ALL of it. If not, it could break loose down the line and be sucked back into you engine. I'm telling you, don't half a$$ this.

I did plan on taking them off originally, but after looking at them I changed my mind. The bolts are pretty rusted, and I dont' want to break one of those , maybe if there was a quick guide i'd reconsider (i did do a lot of searching but didn't find anything, and the haynes manual makes it seem easy )
