Around 69K miles I started getting the classic rumble/vibration from the rear passenger side wheel. Car is under extended warranty, so I took it to the dealer, as the warranty says that front and rear wheel bearings are covered. Diagnosis was that the bearings needed replacing, but could only be done with a new hub assembly, which had a part number NOT covered under warranty. So I owe the $150 diagnosis fee (kinda like gambling to see if a repair is covered) as well as the cost of the repair - close to $400 in total. Wouldn't have asked to check for warranty coverage if the literature didn't mislead me...

you got screwed! They charged you $150 so they could charge you another $250. I would raise hell. Call other Ford dealers and play dumb. See what they say and go back and kick some A$$!

$150 to confirm your diagnosis, that's a ripoff.
Rear bearing /hub can only be replaced as one unit.
I'd move discussion to next level in dealership, then Ford (assuming it's their warranty).

I have to agree with the others - you are getting the shaft. My rear spindle assembly was replaced at my Ford dealership for approx $200. I paid it in full as it was not a warranty repair!

Good Luck,

Thanks guys. I've escalated to the dealership manager, who is holding the party line - it is a non-covered part, and I agreed to the $150 diag charge if the part wasn't covered. I was sure that it was a bearing (and my ESP says it covers f/r bearings) because when I first heard the noise, I was out-of-town and passed by the local Ford dealer, who was nice enough to send a tech to test drive the car, and the guy said it was definitely a bearing.

What was worse, is that the car went into the shop on Friday, was taken apart and not reassembled for me, so I was stuck without a car for the weekend...no offer of a loaner or rental...and barely an apology from the dealer. The extended warranty is simply a ripoff. If Ford cannot help me out with this, they've lost me as a customer...and I've put almost 300,000 miles on Fords between this Contour and my old 89 Escort GT (215,000 miles before clutch #2 went and I had to say bye bye...)

If you are forced to pay first, and fight Ford later, make sure you get the old hub/bearing.
