Hi, I just picked up a 96 Contour SE 5speed. When I shift from 2-3 I hear a little gear grind. Does this mean that clutch is gone or my clutch is not engaged fully when all the way down. It also happend on 1-2 shift if you take it to higher rpm's. By the way do these cars have hydrulic clutch or cable(mechanical)? And how do you adjust these to make sure it is not the bad clutch, before I start ripping the trany off to replace the clutch?

thanks,
mhodzic

Clutch is hydraulic & self adjusting. If the clutch clears on first without any grind it sounds ok,can bleed it if you like but I'd change the trans fluid first,as its an older trans stick with Mercon III,if you have 'blocked' upshifts and/or noisy shifts the syncros could be worn....

I had the same thing on my '00 SVT, 2-3 shift at Higher RPM'S (over 3k), bad 3rd gear, 3 & 4th gear synchro's. I would bring it back if you have any sort of 30 day 1,000mi type warranty.. Thank GOD I did.. it was 13.2 hours of labor plus parts(although Terry says it should take about 11 hours, but he knows what the hell he's doing laugh )

mhodzic,

Had a similar problem with my '99 V6 on 1-2 upshift. I had it fixed under warranty and was told that the synchro had worn prematurely. They replaced the whole unit. Sounds like you may have a similar issue to what I had.
