I have a clicking/rattling sound on the passenger side of the engine zetec VCT. I took the belt off today and the noise is still there. Its kind of like a lifter noise but the car runs just fine. Also the noise is not as bad when it has warmed up. Could it be something to do with the vct? I have no check engine light. Its an atx

most likely it is the timing belt hitting the cover. This normally only happens when the car is cold. there is alot of information on this in the zetec forum if you search. This is a fairly normal and frequent amoung the cars. you can either take the cover off, put washers in as spacers or live with the problem, your choice

Can removing the cover cause any problems?? Like dirt getting in something that it shouldnt? If not it would look better without it, I would think.

I've had mine off for a few months. The 98+ cover isn't a completely sealed unit, so any dust that can get in from the bottom side would still make its way to the gears and all.
I'm not sure how protective the '95-'97 unit is. From the diagrams I've seen, it looks like more of a monster to take off, so it may be more protective.

What year is your tour?
If its a later model, it probably is not the belt cover as they were revised later on. (I'm guessing a later model since it's a VCT).
It may be the belt tensioner- mine is obnoxious when cold.

Here's a garage mechanic's trick.
Take a small section of hose or tubing and holding one end of the tube to your ear, move the other end near where the sound is.
This will help you isolate where the sound is coming from. Them you can tell what part is the most likely culprit.
To check the belt tensioner, pull the passenger wheel and wheel well off. The tensioner and pulley will be staring you in the face.
