My cruise control stopped working. I found that the resistor in series with the on button appears open. I would like to test this before taking the wheel apart. Does anyone know, or can anyone find the value of this resistor? It is not identified in the Haynes manual.

Shown, but no value given in Ford wiring manual. Several of the other cruise switches have resistors shown as well.
Not familiar with cruise on these cars, but switch replacement may be the route to go. It appears that discrete voltage levels, using these resistors, are the way the various commands are sent to control module.
To confirm your diagnosis why not check the other resistors?
BTW I presume you've disabled air bag while working in this area of your car.

By removing the connector from the cruise module under the hood, I can measure all the resistor values by depressing the appropiate button. The on button is connected to the battery in series with a resistor. The horn works the same, but has no resisitor between the same 2 points. Rather then take the thing apart, I was hoping just to add a push button on the dash, with the correct series resistor, at least to prove it fixes the problem. If no one knows its value, I can hook up a potentiometer and try to guess it.

... or else buy replacement switch and avoid tacky add-on dash button. smile

p.s. Unless you measure directly across resistor you can't discount switch having an open connection or perhaps dirty contact.

my cruise control can be a major biatch to engage. sometimes i'm driving for a few miles easily constantly trying to engage. i try all the methods. quick pressing, mid pressing, holding the damn buttons for several seconds. i dont know if this is a real problem that i should have the dealer look at. if u do and its nothing, i then have to pay them for diagnosing a nonproblem

...and yes, I did SEARCH first before asking.
