Did the replacement thing on our '95 2.5 and encountered most of the same problems in removing the old one. The new sensor is a really tight fit on the older models. I did discover the perfect installation tool turns out to be a cheapie 3/4 inch crow-foot wrench (3/8" drive, Harbor Freight, maybe $8/set). It fits around that sensor like it was specially made to do the job. Add an extension and you can tap all you want without fear of breaking anything.
