I've had my second SVT for a few months now.
The shifter (both 98's) seems really loose in or out of gear. Not much side movement, but around two-three inches of up and down! This amount is at the top of the shifter at the knob... Is this normal? If not what are the solutions? Do I need new bushings, cable, ?? Please help!

Thanks.

Mine used to do it really bad, probably about 2-3 inches sounds right, maybe even more. But, I complained to the dealer and they replaced the tower something or other behind the firewall, I'd have to look at my paperwork. In anycase, it got much better but still has close to a half inch or more of play.

No one? The tranny has been popping out of gear recently as well. Three times now had the car in first and it did this... Twice I was stopped on an incline and once while moving.

Please help!

1)Could be the adjusters at the tranny end of the cables, they heve been known to 'slip' 2)If the levers on the side of the trans tower move as much as the shifter then its in the box, either the shifter mech tower, worn selector forks or in the syncro hubs (re jumping out of gear)..

something simple.

My shifter also felt loose. It never tried to pop out of gear but it was definately loose feeling.

I poped the boot off the shifter and you know what I found.

The upper part of the shifter tower is held on with 4 bolts. Mine was missing 2 and the other 2 were loose. I snugged them down and the problem went right away. Now I just need to get two more. I think they are metric since most everything else on the car is.

Terry,
Are the adjusters at the tranny end of the cables able to be tightened up. I'm sure there is a fix, but do you know a quick how to for taking some of the slack out of the cables. I have a 98 EO and I also have a lot of up and down play in the shifter. Thanks again for the help.

If the cable adjusters ar slipping the only real fix is two new cables, you need a buddy to move the stick slow while you feel if both the lever AND the inner cable at the trans end move,if the inner moves but not the lever then the adjuster is shot....
