Today while driving around doing shopping my mom in our 1996 Contour had serious problems selecting the gears. My dad and I were picking up my new 87 Toyota MR2 ( laugh ) and my mom called and my dad eventually got there and cruised down the road revs going up and down at like 20 to the ford dealership and they say they will probably need to fit a reconditioned gearbox (ATX) in. It will be about $3000 parts and labor!!! the cars only worth like $5500 or so! We have only had it a month also. Anyway has this happened to anyone else? It is a 1996 Zetec and wasnt treated harshly before. My dad was pissed to say the least! Can anyone help explain it to me cause its bad?

welcome to the dead atx club....sounds pretty close to what happended to me when mine when...i lost second the fourth gear synchros and had to limp my car down a short freeway run doing 70 in 3rd gear at something like nearly 5000 rpms i think it was

anyway, yup price varies somewhat but mine cost 2700 at the dealer which may have been a shop rate or warranty rate since i have coverage...i've seen some say 1500 but as far as i knw the atx itself costs at least that much...just seems to be an expensive part and labor

maybe u all can check around for lower replacement price than what u are being quoted because u can pretty much count on the dealership not going down on the price...and i dont think they are too interested in taking the time to repair your old tranny...they wanna replace so the can get your left nut along with the arm and leg

95 contour se...dark blue...monsterflow air filter...remanuf atx...wiring harness recall or bust!!!96k miles...motorcraft awsf32pp plugs & red ford racing 9mm wires...kvr black plated cross-drilled rotors & carbon fiber pads...currently undergoing renovation...excuse our dust!!!
are my dodgers for real????

Well we found out what happened, it has to do with the solenoid. It was a known problem to Ford that over the years the modified to stop the problem. The guy at the shop knew of this and was able to help us. I dont know the details of it yet but its going to be fixed. laugh Still expensive tho frown
