I'm thinking about buying this SVT Contour today, it has 79K miles. How long can I expect the major engine components to last? I don't drive extremely hard, but the car will see redline or near redline from time to time.

I've seen some people have rod problems at 105K, that's not very long for an engine. I'm coming from a Lexus where people run them 250+k miles with no major internal issues. Before the Lexus I had a Maxima which was the same story.

With the proper maintenance the Duratec (no H!) will last indefinitely.

The key word in that sentence is "proper"

The Duratec will last 10 years, 9 months, 8 days, 7 hours, and 46 minutes. He he! Just kidding! Forever!
My Duratec is up to 185,000 miles and still kicking (of course with the annoying tranny issue). Otherwise I love me car! For the price I seen you post previously I'd say go for it!

Talk to parkedcar (I think is his name) he has one with 253K on it.

My parents have a 95 with 160K+ (not sure on exact mileage because I no longer drive it) with no problem with the engine. My 2000 has 103K without problems (and I plan to keep adding a few more miles to that)

One datapoint: 128,8xx mostly highway miles as of today with no problems. Driven hard with readline shifts every day and occasional forays into "son, lemme rip your license up right here" speeds. Mobil 1 since 106k miles, unknown prior.
