I recently took a road trip to Las Vegas and on the way home I was cruising at about 80 mph and noticed that my speedometer needle was all the way at 160mph.

I had the car on cruise control at 85mph and the needle would go from 80mph down to 160mph and up again. After about 30 min. it just stayed at 160mph.

I believe it may be a short somewhere, but I could be wrong. When I would turn on my high beams it would go back to normal but after a few seconds would return all the way back to 160mph. I would also hear a high whine in the radio when the needle would go to 160mph.

Any thoughts on what may have caused this?

The needle seems to be fine now that I'm driving around town.

It could be the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). Sorry, I can't tell you much more than that.
