Pretty much covered it in the subject line. I've trolled through the last year's A/C posts and couldn't find an answer to this specific question. Background: A/C won't blow cold. The compressor won't come on when A/C is selected (verified no power at the compressor with a circuit tester) The relay that controls the compressor can be heard clicking and is NOT defective. This was verified by temporarily swapping for the starter relay (same relay) The WOT compressor cut-out relay (the blue one) is defective....at least I think it is. It is burning hot so I think it's shorted. I've ordered a new one. The system was tested for leaks and found to be tight. Question: Will a defective WOT compressor cut-out relay cause a general A/C compressor non-actuation failure? Ie: will the circuit be made to the A/C compressor when the A/C is selected on the dash switch only when the WOT relay is also OK and present? If I had a circuit diagram I guess I could verify this for myself but I'm leaning on your collective wisdom. :-) /Eric Ottawa, Canada '96 Mercury Mystique GS 4 Cyl., ATX

Thanks. Great advice and more proof of how valuable these forums are! I bid on the CD. Still wondering if anyone has a quick answer though?! Call me lazy!

WOT relay inserts N.C. contact in clutch circuit. WOT energizes relay, opening contact shutting off a/c.
p.s. Check CEG classifieds for service cd.

Sorry horseydug but what does "N.C." mean..."no circuit" or "normal circuit"?
BTW, thanks for the tip about the classifieds. I'll check it out.

Sorry, n.c. = normally closed, i.e. when coil is in its normal de-energized state contact is closed and conducts current. Normally open (n.o.) contacts close when coil is energized.
BTW, welcome onboard.

A guess, but if the relay is hot, the contacts are open and that is why no A/C. If you figure out which contact are the coil relay and which are the N/C contacts, you could jump the connector at the contacts and have the A/C on a even at WOT. It will slow you down but you would be cool.

Thanks. I'm hoping you're right as that's my guess too and a relatively cheap problem to fix (~$21 Cdn for the relay). I'll let you know.

N.C. means Normally closed N.O means normally opened...
its like norally is when there is no power to it.. in the case of some switches its like with noral pressure and the valve is normally closed.. and when you get too much pressure it opens... and then closes when the pressure goes down..... in the case of the Wide open trottle the thing is normally closed and opens when you gun it so the engine can give all its power to the drivetrain so you can drive off like a bat out of hell... with the a/c compressor engaged you will suffer some loss of power due to the compressor using up some of the power.......

What about a vacuum leak? I had that prob where the a/c hose was coming off or something and cold air wouldn't blow, and the only air that would blow was out the defrost vents. Might want to check that just in case.
