I've got a 2000 Contour where the O/D light flashes upon going up a long grade. Any new revelations in this regard beyond the attached article in Gears?

http://www.atra.com/gears/janfeb02/newKid.html

It was somehow assembled with one of the old black sensors even though it is a newer model. Maybe it was a leftover part that they threw in it since it was the last year.

O/D light flashing means that there is a problem with one of the sensors or the electrically system of the tranny.

Might be hard to retrieve the actually code, since it might not be stored in continuious memory. I take it that the CEL did not come on? It would be worth a try though. To be honest, even though I have a `98 Ford Service CD, there is no talk or mention of the O/D light flashing. On pre OBD-II systems, there was some codes that the O/D light would flash, but on OBD-II systems there is nothing of the sort.

For some more reading, check out some links I have put together. http://www.geocities.com/yyz81/cd4e/links.html

Please, let us know what you can find about if the system set a hard code and what it was. We can help you alot better from there. Just too many variables to start throwing stones.

Oh yeah! Welcome aboard to CEG.

[EDIT]Thanks for posting that link! I have been looking for it since I lost it some time ago. I am adding back to my current list right now!![/EDIT]

You know, even before I get the chance to post my new problem today, its already up and answered with some help. You guys are awesome.

On my way to the CEG meet at Joe's house, I was fooling around on the highway with Steve and Hector. Anyways, while I was showing them two what a duratec can do against the zetecs, my o/d light started flashing. It was a hot day today, and it was a long way to Joe's house, so we suspected it was my transmission being overheated. Not to mention the burning plastic/rubber smell that was getting into car. When we got off of the highway, I noticed that my transmission is upshifting very hard. It was never this rough before. They told me I should just let my car cool off and we will see what happens later on. So about 4 hours later I went back into my car to drive it, and the o/d light stopped flashing. BUT it still has a rough upshift. Is my transmission fried? They suggested I flush my transaxle fluid, should I do that and is it hard to do? Is it maybe a sensor? Am I going to have to take the bus to work now?

By the way, this is an automatic transmission with almost 76,000 miles on it. The rest of the info is

Yeah, you feel tough behind your new zetec.

.... so you like picking on old cars? Even with a messed up trans (maybe), blocked cats (maybe), and messed up EGR valve or possibly blocked EGR passages... I STILL took you.

maybe I should look into taking care of my car a little better, and getting money for repairs. by the way, nice touch with steve's starter, too bad i left before seeing that.

...shows him for showing off with his remote starter all the time.

lithium398, the hard upshifts that you mentioned.... that is most likely caused by your line pressure getting out of control. Older units did have some issues with this and was addressed in several way. The cheapest way is the Trans Go Shift Improvment Kit. It will update mainly your hydraulic system, so that it can keep better control of things. No! It is not a performance shift kit and yes, it is the only one avaliable on the market for us CD4E owners and yes, I am still waiting to hear from TCI!

I have actually read, in small articles here and there, about the CD4E line pressure getting out of kilter - like yours did and causesing some very serious damage. One report of a cracked case! Most of other cases are cracked drum units.

Same goes for you though, just like Kressler. You will have to get the car scanned and see if you can turn up a code. Then we will go from there. Hopefully, in both of your cases, it is only the TSS.

Ya know? Come to think of it... My O/D light has never flashed! And I had some seriously wicked electrical issues with mine. Gosh! I really wish I could find some more info on how that darn O/D light works in conjuction with the MIL. I still see that they work together, so there should be a code for each of you, but what "actually cause it to illuminate.

I suspect it may be the TSS. I took the car for a drive around the block just now. It doesnt lunge forward as much as it did when i got off of the highway yesterday. It still isnt as smooth as it used to be though. I checked my fluid and it seems low, so im going to replace the fluid. Im also going to go to the dealership and buy a TSS. I know I can get it cheaper online, but I missed work today to try the cheapest possibilities on my car. My job is 20 minutes away, so I didnt want to risk my tranny today. This gives me time today to do whatever I can. I also checked if there are any shavings in the trans fluid, and I didnt see any. Maybe thats a good sign? Should I totally replace my fluid, or should I just top it off? I read somewhere that flushing it is not a good thing to do if its old. Does replacing the fluid entirely mean flushing it? Im going nuts because I know nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

New Zetec? My car has more miles than yours. How about 85K?
