A replacement Pollen Filter or Cabin Filter, as Ford Calls it,
should not cost you more than $15.
If they insist that it costs $70, ask them why ?
It takes a total of 10 minutes to change it.

Cabin filter is relatively easy to change. It should cost you around $15-20.

Both they Haynes and Chiltons manuals are a little off on this procedure. If you decide to DIY, you DON'T need to remove the wiper, and it is on the passenger side.

The filter actually costs about $34 because I just bought one and that was the price. I got mine from the dealer so I don't know if that makes a difference or not. It should only take you a few minutes to do. I just did mine at 30,000 miles yesterday as well as have the transmission, fuel system, and air induction system serviced. I was able to save $200 off the normal cost because I did much of the work myself. It can be a little tricky and you will need a torx driver (did I spell that right?). Just watch out for sharp edges because I got a nice cut across my hand and didn't even notice until I saw blood running off my hand. Good luck.

I bought one for $25 from a Furd dealership, and that was only because none of the local shops had one at the time. Bill Jenkins would also be a good source to look at in a pinch, but I don't know what he's asking with the discount.

You can buy generic pollen filters from Purolator as an example. The availability for the Contour is better than when I checked two years ago. And it is about half what a Ford dealer would charge you.

As far as doing it yourself, yes it's straight forward and you do not really need to take off the windshield wipers. Do be careful not to loose the couple of black plastic screw covers. They're a pain to find if you drop 'em somewhere!
