So my front right spring broke on my 98 E0. Didn't kill the tire like some other have reported, so at least I am lucky in that respect. How much do you think Ford will want to have it fixed? (It is saturday night now, and I am trying to brace myself for the shock come monday morning) I assume that the springs are replaced in pairs, and an alignement is needed also. Sounds like it might be a little bit pricy... Oh yay

Do it yourself, if that's at all possible.

The labor of doing it will almost undoubtedly cost more than the pair of springs themselves.

Just to make a wild-ass guess on the price of replacing the front springs at a dealership plus an alignment... $400-$500. Liberal guess.

If you are due for struts now is the time. The labor is about the same. The springs are mounted around the struts and the struts must come out to change the springs.

There is a recall on the Contour front springs.
The recall supposedly wasnt' extended to include the SVT,
but we are finding out that the SVT is using the SAME SPRINGS !!

You may want to ask your dealership to check on this for you and see if it has been updated.

If the dealers cannot cover the repair under the recall,
after your SVT is repaired, you should file a claim with NHTSA.
If enough SVT owners, those who have made the repairs,
and those who experience the broken springs,
make claims to NHTSA, they will force FORD to extend the coverage to the SVT Vehicles.

NHTSA Complaint Form

This is the ONLY WAY for SVT Owners to be heard !!

The car is going in tomorrow, we'll see how it goes... Thanks for the input guys, I'll see if they will cover it under the recall, and if not I'll report to the NHTSA.

Its back at the dealer now... They offered to cover the spring replacement under the recall (for the front springs) and I am having them put in two new SVT struts. So it looks like all I need to pay for is the $80 struts, since labor is covered by ford. Took them a few days to locate the SVT springs and struts, but so far so good...

It looks like ford may have added the SVT to the recall, or as they call it "service plan"

SunnySide Ford in Holden, MA replaced the front springs free of charge for me under the recall. I'll post what recall number it was covered under when I go home to where I've got the paper work. I've always had really good luck with this dealer, and they surprise me because I don't expect Ford service to be as good as these guys are...

So after a day in the shop, my E0 has gotten:

- 2 new SVT front springs courtesy of ford
- 2 new SVT front struts (I didn't pay for any labor since they had to pull the struts to get the springs off)
- 4 wheel alignment
- MA state inspection

Total bill: $270

I couldn't have done it cheaper myself, surprisingly.
