I was driving the other day and my CEL came on. I stopped at Autozone and it spat out code P0401 which has to do with EGR valve flow etc. I think it may have done this because I forgot to reset the ECU after upgrading my intake system, so I pulled the fuses and reset it and the car seems to be running fine. Should I be concerned that it threw a code, or was it simply my fault for not resetting the ECU after my performance upgrade?

The light came back on tonight, any suggestions as to what to change first? I've found from searching that most people think that the EGR valve should be changed around 60k. I can get the part for 42.99 and I've heard it is easy to change. Any opinions?

Suggest you search P0401 threads. Here's one to get you started: P0401

You might also experience P0402 excessive flow. I had both 01 & 02 at the same time. Ended up finally being the "DPFE" sensor that has two rubber hoses attached to the tube feeding the exhaust gases from the rear manifold to the Egr. It only took it 6 months before it finally gave up the ghost. Intermitents This is a fun one to chase and catch, even with a laptop w/OBD II software, Ford CD manual and of course the all the CEG'ers help. If it does turn out to be the "DPFE" make sure to get F77Z-9J460-AB it's plastic/revised and suppose to last longer. If you have the time find someone to give you a discount. It's suggested retail at most dealers is around $75. My cousin has a shop and got for me from a dealer for $35. What I'm getting at is it's has high mark-up. Paul

Suggest that you check the EGR passages behind the TB gasket before doing anything else. They seem to get clogged regularly on these cars.
If it's not that, then you can check the EGR valve, DPFE, and EVR.

I ordered one a couple of weeks ago from Bill Jenkins (thanks, Bill), I think it was around $57.00. Although, the car runs much better with the new DPFE, my CEL came back after 3 or 4 days.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I'm in the process of investigating still, howevever now the engine light seems to come on and turn off in the normal process of driving around. Does this help to narrow it down?...opinions welcome.
