I have a 99 se with 75000 and just had a fuel pump go out. My friend has a 99 svt and the same thing happen around 75000 miles. Is this common or just a glitch in the beast?

I've taken the car to the local Ford dealer who is in the process of putting in a new fuel pump right now. It's just too bad my warrenty ran out as the car was being towed to the dealer.

The Cougar guys have been having problems with their fuel pumps on returnless fuel systems.

See:
http://www.fastcougar.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=10&threadid=31464
for more info, and their progress on getting an aftermarket fuel pump (assuming you've got returnless).

If the failure happened before the warranty expired, they should cover it for you under warranty. The tow to the shop should not count in the miles. Ask to talk to the service manager. If the service manager is sceptable, ask him to please review it with his rep. Don't piss off the service manager. He is your best source for help at this time. You can even suggest to him that "you have to be on my side on this" when he aproaches Ford. Let us know what happens.

Is this unique for returnless 'smart pumps' or do us old skool returnable fuel guys have to keep an eye on this as well?

Thanks for the info Big Jim I'll ask them tomorrow when I talk to them. They seem to be pretty familair with the contour problems. This is a great car and I hope to get it even better. The SVT exhaust helps along with the air intake.

Yes, it is a returnless system problem. The fuel pumps are completely different.
