Im really not trying to be an Ass, but try the search feature.....I ahve been here since OCT of last year and have seen at least 20 posts on that (2 started by me). There is a tone of infomation that has been repeated that you can find on the search......and to answer your question, Mobil 1, Amsoil and a few others are Damn good for our cars....they are the most ressitant to degrigation and seem to stay the collest and flow the best....if anyone is going ot use synthetic i would reconmend it.

High quality, premium synthetic, easy to come by (Walmart, etc), usually can be found on sale. Engine wear is reduced to a minimum using this type of oil.
Other brands of high quality, premium synthetics (to name only a few) are Royal Purple, Redline and Amsoil.

Speaking of engine wear, why doesn't more people use the pre-oiler? Afterall everyone seems to be convinced that 70% of engine wear comes from cold starts.

Lets put it this way...
Ive been using non-synthetic cheapco brand oil from my local lube shop . Well my mom has, but thats a different story... and when I started doing my own oil changes using mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30.... ive noticed atleast 25 percent lower in temperature on my guage. i think that says a lot.

Josch, thanks for the info.
I have a lot to learn with engines.
Function before fashion.

I don;t smell or see any oil burning, and since I've had my rear main seal replaced 6 months ago oil level has been perfect ever since.
I'll be going to the Zoo at that time but I will not participate due to blown struts..

I use Royal Purple 10-40 and 10-30 depending on weather. 5-50 was overkill i believe. Ill stick with this great synthetic fluid. A little pricy but definetly worth knowing its good oil!

Eric, you're probably right, the higher viscosity of the 15w-50w is likely making up for poor compression if it's that noticable a difference.
Most likely the rings. The old test for that used to be to do a compression test and if it was below spec.'s then pour an ounce of oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and redo the test. If that brought compression up to spec. then it would be rings/cylinder wall. If not then the problem would be in the head.
Yes, Mobil does make a 15w-50w Mobil 1. If the motor is working fine then 15w-50w oil is really only necessary for extreme heat conditions such as racing, especially with forced induction.

for whatever reason this does seem to be an emotional rather than technical issue. My experience has been that thicker oils keep engines alive longer. For those that think the newest engines are designed differently, check out the specs over at BMW. The M5 (redline 8k)requires Castrol synthetic 10-60 oil. Using 5-30 voids the warranty. The A3,B3 oil specs called out in the owners manual of a 2002 VW 1.8 turbo Passat translates to Mobil-1 0-40 oil ONLY. 5-30 etc doesnt cut it. Penzoil tech responded to an info request and indicated the only oil in their lineup that passes these specs is Penzoil Syntheic 5-40. I have seen recent posts indicating M1 0-40 is becoming the oil of choice for turbos. Must be an increase in demand during the past year - even Walmart now carries it here in NY. I ran the last batch of 0-40 in my SE Sport for 12 months & 11.8k miles. I dont rely on pet theories tho- I back it up & used oil analysis indicated the oil held up fine. Not surprising since this oil passes MB latest spec on extended oil drains. There is much good info over at bobistheoilguy.com
