Hey has anyone ever mounted speakers in the back seat dashboard. I'm looking for ideas to build a deck to mount 6x9's or 6 1/2 's.

It sounded decent even though the Audiobahn subs I used weren't ideal for free-air use. A Dayton 8" Quatro would be a good choice if I were to do it over. Rear deck subs good choice if you want to fill out the low end of your system and don't want to give up any trunk space.

I've since replaced them with a single 12" Lambda PB due to more bass cravings.

Sweet. I'm looking for ideas. It just sucks with that middle saet belt up top. It makes it really hard to do anything unless you cut the whole thing out. I just want to put 2 6x9's or 2 6 1/2's up there. I have a 12' Alpine S-type in a custom made box in the trunk.

Yeah im in the process of doing this also, I have 2 8" audiobahns mounted the back there, but im in the process of mounting them so that the magnets of each speaker sticks up through the rear deck. Cutting that seat belt mount out was the biggest challenge but once thats done its fairly easy from there. I made boxes out of an quickcrete concrete tube, they fit perfect and look really nice, i got that Idea from someone on this board, but cant remember who, but they get the credit for it. I will post pics of these speakers as soon i get home from the middle of the Gulf of Mexico.

If you are just putting in midrange speakers, don't bother, it ruins the soundstage by pulling it to the rear. If you have a sub already, concentrate on building up the front soundstage.

I did it with 6.5s in the rear dash, it was bad

*ahem* 6x9 Alpine Type-R 2-way coaxials in the package tray. Louder than the 6.5 components in my front doors. Lowered the gain to the 6x9s until it evened out. Sounds fantastic. What's the problem with mids/highs coming from the rear?

In an ideal world, we'd all have Dolby Digital, DTS, or some sort of surround processing system in our cars. But, such systems are far and few between and expensive. The typical car stereo only produces a stereo signal (Right & Left) which should be placed in front of the listening position as was intended in the recording.

Placing speakers behind you draws the image back. It no longer seems like the band is playing a set on your hood, but they're now jumbled up inside the car with little to no coherence between the speakers and music.

Some people prefer the latter as they have heard little else and it sounds familiar. A SQ competition stereo would definately sound different to the casual listener as it might appear a bit "distant" with everything coming from in front of the listening position.
