Can the V6 be removed from the engine compartment separate from the transmission or must the transmission and engine be removed together?

Thanks Lee. And thanks again for letting me know about your engine for sale, even though I decided to go a different route. Without the resources and help of those here at CEG, I'd be sunk.

Hmm, well now I read in my Haynes manual that the engine and transmission must be removed together as a unit. Is Haynes wrong about this?

It is physically possible, I remember people doing it. However, it is probably both easier and faster to pull the tranny with it. That's what I did. Easiest of all to drop the subframe, but that requires a very different approach. And a lift.

After doing it both ways, remove both at the same time. Just getting the clutch to line up and get the engine back in on my car took 6 hours... it sucked.
Pulling both axles, the steering knuckles, and the linkage is far easier and takes less time. That's the way Rick's car was done and it was far easier that way.

Thanks so much guys. Thanks for sticking with my seemingly unending questions regarding my engine install.
Bnoon and Terry: I know you've been following me for the past month or so on this. Long story short, I'm having a Duratech from a '98 with 35K installed. It ended up being the most affordable option for me after checking prices to have my current engine rebuilt or having a remanufactured long block installed. Anyway, the shop had two quotes for the removal and install, depending on whether the engine and transmission could be removed separately. Hopefully by end of next week my car will be up and running again. It's been 7 weeks or so since the engine fire.

Be sure to report your engine fire to the NHTSA, especially if you have any suspicion at all that it was caused by deteriorated wiring harnesses..

Qaz -- Thanks. Actually, my dealership replaced the wiring harness under that Ford "MO3" program, thinking that was the cause of the engine fire. Well, after they carefully inspected the wiring harness once it was removed, they said it was fine and not frayed or worn. So, I've got a new wiring harness, some injectors and a fuel rail but no engine compression. There's metal in the oil and it's varnish-like. It's horrifying.
The truth of the matter is that, from what Bnoon had to say based on my reporting of what happened, my car overheated severely due to my ignorance and heated up so badly that it eventually caught fire. Right where the fuel rail and injectors are. One very, very painful lesson learned.
