My engine really wants to go, even when I don't want it to. I'll find my car speeding up on me on the highway (after I let off the gas) and when I push in the clutch the RPMs will climb to around 4 grand before finally settling down to normal. Its an intermittent problem. I'm taking it to the dealership Thursday (still got 1000 miles on my warranty!) but I would like to see if anybody else has experienced or might know what could cause this.

I did a search, didn't come up with anything. Search experts are more than welcome to post links to similar threads.

I remember seeing this problem somewhere, and a possible solution for it, too. It's not in the FAQs as far as I can see. It may be in the old forum archives. If I see anything I'll post a link.

I had the same problem for like a year, but I finally realized a few months back what was causing it. My TH-fix plug was drilled out too large. After replacing the IAC, cleaning then replacing the MAF, and having no luck, I decided to go back to square one. I took out the TH-fix and started over. I drilled out like 6 different size holes and tested each, then I finally figured out what worked perfect for me (I forget what size now...but it would vary by car anyhow). Since I did that my RPMs have not risen by themselves AT ALL. It's such a huge relief to have fixed that problem. It was so bad and annoying that it got to the point I just wanted to get rid of the car! If you have the TH-fix installed, take it out and maybe make your hole a bit smaller. If you don't have the TH-fix installed, give it a try.

Thanks hetfield! That sounds exactly like my problem. I'll see what the dealer has to say about it.

I also have not done the TH fix, so its probably not that.

I had that problem for three days last winter. I almost died because i couldnt stop coming on to a very busy red light. I ended up putting the car into neutral so that my brakes could slow the car down. SCARY SH*T I still dont know what the problem is up to this day, I hope it doesnt come back.

I had that same problem....... but mine was a fuel pump going bad...... when I was a 1/4 of a tank of less the car would hesitate at higher RPM's..... But no matter how much gas I had in the car the idle what jump by itself.... it would "hang" and then drop back to normal... I took out the fuel pump..." another bad design by FORD" and the screen for the pump on the bottom of the pump was sitting on the bottom of the gas tank.... I tried to put it back on it wouldn't go back on.... So, I bought a new pump and installed it and the hesitation went away... the throttle hang went away...

I figure the reason that the rpm's where reving up by themselves is that the computer was trying to compensate for the lack of fuel.... I took apart the pump and there was a lot of dirt and such in it... So, I guess the best way you can figure out your problem would be for you to get a fuel pressure check..... I don't see how jamming a copper pipe cap into a hose would fix the problem?????? I think it just masks the problem........ It may not be the fuel pump.... but maybe something else... anyway you loose power with that copper cap....

That's why you install a new intake and exhaust and gain back way more power than what you lost with the TH-fix, plus you drop revs faster. w00t!

i guess.... but I dont see why you have to stick a copper pipe cap with a whole in it...... there is somthing else that is wrong with the car..... if your car is bone stock and you have to jam a copper cap to make it work there is something wrong.... i feel that there is somethng else...

I would suggest reading the TH-fix HOWTO. It explains the problem to a satisfactory degree for me: its an emissions control function of the ECU; mandated by tree-hugging hippies that want to have green plants on earth 200 years from now. Be lucky that only certain fleet Contours were gasoline/CNG hybrids. You'll appreciate the copper cap fix when the only cars on the road run on electricity.
