hi all:

Mercury Mystique 96 2.0L

I need some help on a steady CEL
error code = 0171 System too lean Bank 1

Any remedies ??
or does it need further testing. I would appreciate if someone could point me in right direction.

Also,
how do you reset the CEL ? Can you just disconnect battery and push brake pedal 10-15 s to completely drain current in circuit,
or do I need to go to dealer.

thanks,
Hugues -

I wouldn't worry too much if the car is running okay. As far as resetting the CEL, disconnect the battery for 15 mins, then drive it at low speeds for a while after. there is a complete 're-boot' proceedure available at Blue Oval, but I don't think it's completely nessesary. The car will recalibrate quickly on it's own. If the light comes back, disregard my comments and ask someone who knows more than I do about coding. laugh

The following is from the Ford Technical Service Publication CD:

Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0171 bank (1) (cylinder #1) and DTC P0174 bank (2) indicate the fuel/air ratio is too lean. The fuel adaptive system is at the rich correction limit.

Possible causes:

Fuel system

-- Excessive fuel pressure.
-- Leaking fuel injector(s).
-- Leaking fuel pressure regulator.
-- Low fuel pressure.
-- Contaminated injector(s)

Induction system

-- Air leaks after the MAF.
-- Vacuum leaks.
-- Restricted air inlet.
-- PCV system.
-- Fuel purge system.
-- Improperly seated dip stick.

EGR

-- leaking gasket.
-- Stuck open EGR valve.
-- Leaking diaphragm.

Base engine

-- Oil overfill.
-- Cam timing.
-- Cylinder compression.
-- Exhaust leaks before or near the HO2S's.

* Check air intake for leaks, obstructions and damage.
* Check air filter, air filter housing for blockage.
* Verify integrity of the PCV system.
* Check for vacuum leaks.

Pulling fuse 11 in engine compartment fuse box for a couple of minutes resets CEL.

Thank you all for your input. After I had posted, I found quite a few posts about the subject. Sorry about that.

In any case,
I replaced the pre-cat o2 sensor and cleaned up the MAF sensor. The CEL has not come up yet after 20 miles, so maybe it is fixed.
