I have a 96 contour and ever once and a while it will stall but the radio stays on but loses power steering.I shut off then restart and for the rest of the day no problem.This happens only once per day but is a problem in traffic.I just changed all the sparkplugs and wires but was going on before I did this.Also when at a light it feels like it wants to stall but doesnt,when on the brake.Could this be a bad cat

It it a auto or a manual? I really don't think I can help, but someone who can more thatn likely would need this info.

It's normal to loose power steering when the enging stalls because the engine isn't tuning the PS pump. The key is still in the "on" postion so the radio still gets power. A low or rough idle could be caused by intake hose leaks. The cat could be a problem but would also cause lost power at mid-upper RPMs and some strange exhaust/intake noises. CELs, overheating, and a hot footwell area are other extreme symptoms.

Doubtful it's the cat, IAC (idle air control)valve more likely.
v6? A/C on or off?
Radio works from battery, power steering must have engine working to work power steering pump.

Its an auto trans and the a/c was off.If it is the IAC how easy is it to change and what parts are needed-Thanks for all of the great help

IAC valve plus gasket. You didn't advise re v6 so I'm assuming that's what you have.
Back right corner of upper intake manifold, left of power brake booster 2 bolts (actually top is nut on stud) and an electrical connector on right side.
Doesn't hurt to look.
