i would get the powerbook, even if its more expensive, it will be worth it in the long run. glad to hear that there are some mac users on here too. whats everyone running? ive got a 350 mhz imac (soon to be complimented by a new emac or flat-panel imac) and a 400 mhz G4 powerbook (15"), as well as 3 vintage macs. yeah you can see that my family loves macs

i still use my 233MHz v.2 Bondi Blue iMac for graphics stuff. it's easier to manipulate images than on my laptop.
and my Mac Classic sits in the living room as a conversation piece with either "Fish!" or "Clock" running on After Dark.
but i think i have made the transition to XP. i love my Compaq, and i need a PC for biz school in the fall. no Macs allowed...!

I'm not sure if it will affect the pricing on the laptops, but Apple is supposed to officially announce the new (G5?) that will run on a IBM 970 chip in about 2 weeks at the World Wide Developers Conference in San Francisco. Check out the forums at macworld.com for all the info you could hope for.

Either one would be a good choice. I switched to Mac in 1994 and have never looked back. The new OSX (Jaguar) has some great features and very stable. Also very cool. Find out if they both come with it. As for the comments made in one reply about Macs not being "allowed" on campus.....that is only due to the small-mindedness of the IT guys. Macs will work seamlessly on any network when set up properly. They're just too lazy to let you do it. There's lots of software and add-ons for the Mac as well. The argument that the developers/programmers don't write for Mac is pretty stale now. Microsoft has OfficeX for the Mac. Good luck.

Best advice said so far, unless you're planning to go with a 12" or 17" (I would love a 12" G4 PowerBook myself!).

I disagree wholeheartedly!!! And apparently, so do you...Originally posted by baco99: i still use my 233MHz v.2 Bondi Blue iMac for graphics stuff. it's easier to manipulate images than on my laptop.
If they go obsolete so quickly, why are you still able to use a 233mhz G3 iMac?? I bought a 733mhz G4 tower two years ago, and it still runs almost as fast as the day I bought it, and does everything I could ask it to do.
My advice is DON'T go over the top and buy the all out model, unless you think you're actually going to use it. I did a lot of heavy digital video use for a while, but since then my system has been grossly underutilized. Macs are a little more expensive, so take that into account.
I would also recommend the i-series for thrift purchasing because it comes with much more software... I had to steal everything for my G4.

yes, i sort of contradicted myself there. it is just as fast for running Photoshop and Illustrator. but simple things like signing on to the internet with the 56k modem take FOREVER compared to my 2GHz Athlon. even opening programs takes longer.
trust me. i am still a Mac guy at heart, but the last thing i need to worry about in Biz school is not being able to log into some server and not have the IT guys help me because they are lazy. i am going for ease of use with the status quo in this case.
we are also switching to a completely wireless network next year, and that adds a whole other level of complication to it.
i think certain grad schools are more receptive to that sort of thing...like engineering, arts, architecture, life sciences...so choose the system that makes the most sense for what you use it for.

My mac (clone) is SIX years old this month and is as productive for me now as it was then (graphics). This old box NEVER crashes. I have spent a few hundred here and there through the years in upgrades, but only now am I considering a new machine because Apple has abandoned support for OS9.x and below, and it woud be to much of a PIA for me to configure my machine to handle OSX (although I haven't ruled it out). Maybe it's because we are the underdogs in the mac vs. pc world, but mac users are awesome when it comes to help and support for their own. Check out: Macworld forum MacGurus forum
