A few days ago I posted an intermittent power loss problem where the car would feel like the secondaries were opening but not really much of a power increase and the tone of the car would be deeper and more muffled but louder than normal. I had also observed that the gas pedal would feel softer and more 'mushy' when the car behaves this way.... Original post was here...

Anyway I made an observation today that baffles me. IF I drive the car at a steady pace for an extended period of time such as on the highway without varying the speed or position of the throttle (especially if I"m driving like a granny). The car will tend to have the powerloss and musy pedal.

IF I drive the car and gently cycle the speed say up and down a few MPH gently (so constant use of the throttle...even a little) the throttle will firm up again and power will seem to come back.

This makes absolutely no sense!!! Does the computer have some kind of mode where it detects that you are driving like a wuss and knocks the power down??? Kind of like speed step on PIII notebooks?? It has baffled me. Can it be some failing sensor?

Note that I dont have to be anywhere close to 3800RPM where the IMRC is engaged to lose or gain my power back. Could be just feathering the throttle in 5th gear going 50mph and slowly you will feel the throttle tighten up and become more crisp and responsive. Keep it in the same position and you will slowly feel that you're pressing a little more and more to keep it going at the same speed.

Sigh...I have no idea. Car feels killer fast when its cold too (say first 10 mins of driving). IMRC has never seemed to stop working. The only other thing I can think of is either some kind of strange fuel problem or vaccum leak or something like that.

Also one last question. When the computer is reset and has to relearn, does the style of driving in the first few minutes dictate how the car will behave later? Say you reset the computer and get in the car and flog it and beat on it vs driving it slow have any effect on your performance later after the computer has 'learned' what it needs ??

Thanks guys, I know thats a lot of stuff to throw at you but I want to figure out why my car is behaving so quirky.

Could be the fuel pump. If you're trying to get more gas into the engine, if the pump is bad it won't force the gas in fast enough, so your A/F mixture would be off.

Hmmm I never thought about fuel pump...I wonder if the dealer would be able to diagnose the problem. I am afraid that they may not have a clue and hose me by using trial an error at my wallets expense frown
